Adrian Page 1/5 scale Gee Bee R-2
So I "doinked" my Tiger 2 last weekend, and need to put this electric gear in something.
Well, hanging around my shop, is a framed up AP 1/5 R-2, set up for an OS.91 Surpass. Lately, I don't seem to have much interest in glow, so I thought "why not"? After a few calculations, I find out it's about the same weight as my Tiger 2, so the gear that flew the Tiger would be perfect in this model. Looking to see a rtf weight of about 7.5 lbs, or less. The Tiger was 7 1/4 lbs and flew great with this power. 8-10 minutes of good spirited flight, and only use about 50-65% of my packs. Using a Turnigy SK 42-50-650KV with 5s 5000mah pack. 13x8 APC prop.
The main problem, was where to put the batteries. I needed them way forward, but not enough room on the firewall, due to cowl mounts. Too much hassle to build a hatch in an already framed and sheeted model. So, I cut an opening in the lower firewall, and built a tray to slide them in. Next I needed a mount that was 3" long, so I whipped out some 1/8" ply and fabbed one up. Easy Peasy.
Now, I need to find a way to mount the cowl so battery access will be easy. Already had blind nuts and cowl mounts installed, so I just ran some long screws thru the blind nuts, from the back side. Then put some heatshrink on them to create guides. Next I installed some pushrod tube in the mount holes, for the guides to slide into. Then I installed magnets (1/4" x 1/8") in the cowl and firewall. Holds extremely tight.

Some more pics. Last pic is the dummy radial. I will cut out the excess between the cylinders and add pushrod tubes, plug wires etc.
I have assembled the model with this set-up, and balance is almost dead-on. I have not mounted the servo tray in the fuse yet, so I can slide it around to get perfect balance.

Hey great looking conversion going on there. Happy to see someone besides myself and a few buddys doing the larger electrics. Your dummy engine came looking great. After you paint it that motor will look just the part.

Don,
Glad you like it. I have been messing with smaller electric indoor stuff for a while, but, I just can't get into small models. I recently decided to power a 125" B-17, I have been building, with electric power, so that's what I have been testing power systems for. Now that I have dicovered electric, a lot 40-60 size stuff I have sitting around may get into the air. Like a .40 size twin Comanche, and a .60 Byron V-35 Bonanza. Oh yea, I almost forgot about the 80" T-34C that is nearly ready to put a finish on.
I'm all "ate-up" with stuff. Reminds me of when I first learned to fly. Wanted build everything I saw.
Here's a few pics of the B-17 so far:
