Great Planes RV 4 Conversion

Hello All

I'm looking at doing a GP RV 4 build. The kit is the 54" wingspan 40 size kit (1/5 scale).

My plan is to use an e-Flight Power 46 and a 4 cell battery. I think this will be powerful enough.

This will be my third kit build and I'm going to try for better detail in the build. In particular I'm considering putting lights on the plane, not to fly at night, just to do it for the experience. I'm considering one of the following light systems::confused:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._Lamp_Set.html

http://www.scaleflying.com/Scale-LED...anes_p_17.html

http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/int/intc24331.htm

Installing the light on the top of the fin looks like it will be a challenge to route the wire and not weaken the fin itself. I'm planning on putting some extra internal bracing as I'll need to drill holes in various parts to get the wire into the fuse.

Any comments on the motor, lights or the conversion in general would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Good luck with the project. Please post progress reports and photos.

Well I have started ordering parts and supplies. I went with the "Integy Complete 8 LED Light Kit w/Control Box
Module
" from tower for my lights. I wanted this http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._Lamp_Set.html but it was shipping from overseas someplace so the 11.99 light set had a $50 shipping charge. I have my servos and am expecting tail wheel assembly, hinges and other supplies - these should be here tomorrow.
I am likely to start on my tail feathers tonight. The challenge is going to be the red light I am going to mount on top of the fin. I need to drill holes in the internal bracing to pass the wires. I also need to make a hole in the top of the fin for the led. Right now I need a 1/4 inch hole in 1/4 inch stock, so that's not going to work. I'm likely to grind off a little of the led so I can get by with a smaller hole. I'll provide a picture of the fin when I get it built and the LED located.

Tail Feathers

2 Attachment(s)
I have assembled the tail feathers, see pictures. I used titebond for all of these joints. In the past I would have used CA, but I thought I'd try using wood glue this time. We will see how it comes out. I still need to sand them to shape, but they look good so far - nice and flat.:o

The holes are in for running the beacon light on the top of the fin. I'll run the wire through to the bottom after I do my sanding. I am planning on putting gussets on the members that have holes to ensure that I have not weakened them to much.

Next will be wing panels. This kit has a most interesting assembly process.

Looks like you are making good progress.

Titebond works well if you don't mind the drying time. No fumes! :D

Not sure what I'm going to do with the ribs in the wing panels regarding glue. I'm likely to go back to CA because I'm concerned that something might move while the wood glue is drying. Likely will try the titebond for the sheeting.
