Electric power system
I am building an old kit plane - a Parker Pelican. The plans for it say that it will require a ".09-.10" gas motor. it will weigh about 40 ounces, including the servos and radio receiver. I would like to fly it with an electric motor. Can anyone suggest a proper motor and battery and other necessary equipment?
It seems to be hard to find such advice. |
I have this in a couple planes that are in the .10 sized range. I run them with a 3s battery, from 1000mah to 2200mah. All depends on the weight you want to carry.

Thanks for your help, Buzz. What else will I need besides a motor and an ESC, that are not used for a gas model? The wingspan of our Pelican is 50 inches, wing area is 395 inches, Length is 31.5 inches. The plan does not show a COG location, so I have to decide where to place this stuff. Do you know of any good books or papers or people that would help us build this plane?

I believe that my Pelican with its steerable nose wheel will have clearance for no more than a 9" prop. Do you think a 9 x 5 wood propeller would work with the BL 400, 1200 kv motor?

I ran some number through this online calc program. Using a 9x6 master airscrew prop, I was able to get 64 ounces of thrust with an Exceed Rocket motor, 2500mah 3s lipo. Going to an APC "E" prop give you a little more power. It will put out around 68 ounces of thrust at a lower amp rating. You can use a 40 amp ESC instead of the 60 amp.
