New Phoenix 40 size mustang brushless system?
 

Just got a notice from Tower Hobbies that Phoenix is coming out with an arf 40 size (about 55 inch wingspan) mustang. this looks decent (not perfect for sure but decent and has fiberglass cowl with retracts for $200. This is balsa and ply construction and it will be about 6lb they say.

I am thinking flying this with a brushless motor setup but not sure what would be good possibilities because I haven't powered any of my several previous mustangs with electric. I have flown mustangs for 20+ years with glow and gas engines so flying it no issue, just the power system.

I was looking for a high kva motor (1000 or so) but they don't seem to be available so could you recommend a system to fly this fairly fast (at least 85 mph)? looks like a lower kva powered by a battery with more cells like maybe 5-6 cells would be the way to go - what do you think? I have a 60 amp esc but would buy a higher amp esc if needed.

If this plane will be a 40 sized, as in a .46 sized 2 stroke. I use this motor on 5s to power them. I pulled my YS .63 out and put this in and had equal to a little more power.

60 amp ESC and a 12x6, 12x7, 13x6 APC "E" props.

eclac, the numbers are

790 watts, 117 ounces of thrust with a 12x6 prop.

Would be a good idea to pick up a watt meter to help keep the magic smoke in the wires :)

thanks for your reply- how fast do you think the mustang will fly with this setup for how long if I used the 12xx7 or maybe a higher pitch prop, at 3/4 or higher throttle, with a 6s 5000 mah battery? I want the mustang to fly at least 85 mph most of the flight time of say 7 minutes.

You can always drop down, try a 10x8, 10x10 prop. A watt meter is a good tool to have. You can see how many watts you are pulling before you smoke something.

I have the setup in my Gilies 202 46 sized plane. It flies faster then it did with the YS63, but I never tried to figure out how fast is was going though?

I got 10 minute flights on the Giles. That was not flying around full throttle, it was with throttle management. I flew it more pattern style then 3D.
