Successful Top-Flite AT-6 Conversion...CRASH!

Well, I finally got my old Top-Flite AT-6 converted over to e-power. I replaced the OS .61FX with an AXI 4130/16 on 20 GP 3300's.

I lined-up on the runway in to the wind and feed her some power, the AXI was making GREAT power and I took off and was climbing strongly. I was in the process on trimming the elevator and started making my first turn...I lost complete radio contact! The At-6 spun in and is totalled!!!!

So much for what seemed at successful conversion.

I don't know what casued the lose of radio reception...everything works on the ground. I range checked with the motor running, all was fine.

I am in process of stripping the gear out of the AT-6 and I will send the RX to Horizon for a check-up.

What should I put the AXI 4130/16 in next???

Thanks

Brian

Brian,

Sorry to hear that your AT-6 was totalled. What an incredible range of emotions in a single flight!

Did your AT-6 have retracts? The only thing that comes to mind was a similar incident by another RCU member that had his retract servo jam and take out the UBEC that supplied power to the receiver and servos.

That sounds like my first P-51 crash. To a "T". Greg, I am starting another thread on the second "stang".

Please give me your input........

Sorry for not replying sooner...

I think I figured out the problem. I think I experienced a high-speed tip stall. The AT-6 was heavy (too heavy) and I had came back on the throttle some and the AOA was very high.

I was using a Castle Creations Phoenix-60, UBEC on 20 GP3300 cells. The AT-6 had Robart air retracts, but the gear was locked down, no air tank, air valve or servo installed.

I tried to cut corners and didn't replace the the standard servos or wheels, that would have saved about 10oz, plus the 50+ oz of batteries, I think I was too heavy.

Can't decide on what to do next....ideas?

Brian
