Default Saito 150 - Worth Fixing

my Saito 150 died today... in a catastrophic way... see pics.

it threw the valve cover, rocker completely off and the piston exploded. that's as far as i have gone with it. bearings are free as anything on the bottom end.

Hi

Keep it for parts. As cheap as they are selling for at the Sell Sites, better off buying another one.

Wow! It looks like the valve fell in the cylinder.

I've had a 150 for sell at the flea market swap meets for several years and no one would pick it up to look at it.

I converted it to gas and I'm going to use it.

It may be cheaper to buy another used one if you still need one?

May I ask what was the MO of the killer? It looks like it over revved (valve impact with the piston).

That 150 apeared to have a few running hours on it.

It looks as though it dropped a exhaust valve first

I thought so too from what the owner said and looking at the piston.

Henry gave me a old style big head Saito 120 once. It had dropped a valve and Horizon wouldn't fix it. Lucky there was no collision

The engine was 20 years old at the time and had a lot of neglected hours on it. When I last saw it running, he was using a 14 X 8 prop on it.

Examining the engine internals, the clearance ramps on the cam were beat up indicative of excessive valve lash and high rpm. The tips of the valve stems were peened over also indicative of a large valve gap and high rpm.

I repaired the engine with a spare valve retainer C-clip from the junk box and it then had good compression.

I gave the engine to Bill Roberson.

So the peened stem kept the valve from dropping all the way into the cylinder (hung up on the valve guide)? Did you have to clean up the stem to remove the valve, if it was bent? If so how? If you reused the valve did you have to true up the retainer grove? If so how?

I think I was there when it conked out. I don't think he adjusts valves. This is an example where people then say that Saitos are difficult after the Hobbs meter shows hours of neglect.

How did you ascertain that the engine has a lot of hours on it? I can't see any of the wear points very clearly.

Oh man, bummer dude. From the looks of the sides of the piston it may have gotten a little warm at some point.

I used a hone stone the dress down the stem to remove the exhaust valve. It took a while. But i was watching TV also. When the spring retainer came up over the grove, it did a pretty good job of cleaning up the peened flange at the top edge of the groove.

I fiddled with it some to determine that the valve nor the quide were bent.

The engine was consumed in a house fire at Bill Roberson's a couple years later.
