Hello Guys,

I'm going to buy my first 4 stroke engine very soon; I need help from you guys regarding selection in between any one of these two engines [link=http://www.hobbybarn.com/proddetail.php?prod=YSFZ70S]YS FZ70S[/link] or [link=http://www.hobbybarn.com/proddetail.php?prod=SAIE072]SAITO 72 AAC[/link]. I don't want to buy OS engine, so please tell me about pros and cons of these two engines only.

That is not a very good comparison. The YS70 is much closer to a Saito 100 in power.

Oh, I thought O.S. 72FS-a, Saito 72 AAC, YS FZ70S, Thunder Tiger F-75S and Magnum XL70 RFS these engines are almost same. But now I understand why YS FZ70S is so expensive because it has more power. I’m looking for 4S engines instead of 2S .46 to .61 class engine for sports and 3D flying.

The YS will beat any other 70 class 4-stroke when it comes down to brute power but it needs a fuel with 20% Nitromethane and 20% Synthetic oil. You cannot use castor in a YS. They also need to be tuned just right and can be cantankerous when seals and regulator diaphrams start to wear out.

Is 20/20 fuel available locally in India?

I've owned an OS FS .72a and Saitos in a few different sizes (but never a .72). The .72a turns a 12x7 at 10,700rpm and will haul a .46 class model around very effectively.

My experience is the OS's are cleaner running and very reliable after the break-in. They can take some running time and tweaking with the low needle before they'll hold a reliable idle and throttle cleanly.

My Saitos all start first flick from new and never stop but they're very messy. It's probably due to the low needle being set excessively rich from the factory. Once tuned they are a bit cleaner to run and just as reliable.

You get what you pay for with TT and Magnum engines. It can be hit and miss in the quality dept. I had a bad TT 4-stroke and will never buy or recommend them to anyone.

In India KLOTZ lubricants are available, so I can make my own fuel. As per you which one is better out of these three: OS, YS and SAITO?

They're all fine engines and i would be happy with any of them.

I always look at the model and how i intend to fly it.
I consider things like engine dimensions and weight required for proper CofG of the model.

The saito's are generally more compact and lighter so if the model is nose heavy or if it's a 3D model where overall weight is an issue then i'll choose Saito. If it can use more nose weight the OS is a good choice.

I would actually look at the Saito .82 as well. Same size and weight and 14% more capacity.

The YS's love to rev so are better suited to faster models and slight smaller props, but they can do the slow speed 3D well too.

FWIW, on my .46 size planes i run the Saito .62 and OS .56a. I had a .72a on my Big Stick for a while and it was a whole lot of fun but too heavy for the small plane so i replaced it with a .62 and save 1/2 pound in overall weight after i removed the lead from the tail. The plane flies much better.

I have been selling all my Saitos and replacing them with YS. The new design regulator on the 70 and 115 is great.
The DZ's are fantastic also. I also sold my only OS 4-stroke in favor of YS.
That's just my experience.

Performance, quality, reliability per dollar, go with the Thunder tiger. If performance is the primary goal go with YS, non of the others really can compare to it all though The Saito 72 on 30% heli fuel is no slouch. If you want moderate power and smooth running the OS might be your choice. In my experience Magnum is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are getting.

According to the engine review linked by ThumbSkull, the YS FZ.70S, spins a 14x4W APC prop, 1,000 RPM faster than does a Jett BSE .76L; a two-stroke engine of greater displacement.

This is beyond respectable!
However, Jim (w8ye), Dave (Hobbsy) and others did remark about these engines not being as reliable in long-term use.

And they require at least 20% nitro fuel and consume it rather quickly.
The original cost of $320 could be of lesser significance, if all running and maintenance costs are taken into account.

personally I like the Saitos, they seem very trouble free and the replacement parts are less expensive. Iown at least one of each Magnum, OS, Saito, Thunder Tiger and Enya.
The Enya make nice power and is totally sweet, my friends run some YSengines that really scream but tend to be more of a handfull as far as maintenence goes.
My experience with the other brands is like everyone elses, OSvery nice, Magnum hit and miss, Thunder Tiger mine had a bad carb but was replaced under warranty and is very good now.

I think for a first time 4 stroke engine user you would be better off with an OS or Saito engine. An YS engine takes a little bit to get the hang of useing it, after that it's not any harder to tune than any other engine. Also how one is to take care of them when there not in use plays a big part in the running of a YS engine. The use of a dino based After run oil will ruin a YS engine where it works well in the others.

I myself would prefer the YS due to the power they deliver and so far I have not had any issues with any of mine running, but I do regular maintance on them once a year or more depending on use. Check the valve lash and Diaphram, adjust the lash and replace the diaphram as necessary.
After that its just fuel and fly. Oh and I use 15 % fuel with no issues what so ever, I won't carry two types of fuel with me to the field unless ones gas.

I would say by the review above that the 70 is the same power as the Saito 91s with 20% fuel and the OS 91 is next inline. the Saito will turn a 13x8 at 10,800-11,000 and the OS is 10,700-10,900 on the same prop.

the 70 is cheaper than either of those engines though.

All the engines mentioned here are good considering their respective qualities.

The YS is the Ferrari of model aircraft four strokes and like a Ferrari it requires the attention
and maintenance of a high performance machine.

The Saito is the pretty boy and second most powerful four stroke for its displacement class.

Once tuned the YS and Saito engines need very little in adjustments and I believe are of the highest quality.

Both the YS and Saito parts are available when rebuilding or overhauling is needed,
OS seems to quit making parts when they discontinue a design and will sell parts until they are depleted.

The rest are like a pickup truck, they will get you down the road but don't expect much more than that.

Now I have decided to go for Saito because it will be my first 4S engine, so now I need some more information related Saito engines, for example fuel, maintenance and tuning etc. I am really glad to find all of you; you people are so helpful, thanks once again.

i would get the saito 82, weight wise its about the same (actually lighter i think) but it makes more power so whynot???

i like magnum engines and have a lot of them, that being said i would get a higher end engine if i was in india because if something was wrong with the magnum returns would be a huge pain, here in the states its no big deal if you get a lemmon and they replace them, it would just be a huge pain from that far away.


one thing you could do if you wanted another 4 stroke in the future for cheaper is look at hobbyking.com they are based in china so shipping is cheaper

Magnum also known overseas as ASP, ASP engines are available in India but I am not sure about replacement part.

As for the YS FZ70-s vs SAITO FA-72 ,

if it's your first time dealing with a 4-stroke,
i'd suggest the SAITO....it's an everyday performer!

I'm from Brazil and I recommend SAITO engines to you , currently have two, 1 72 and 1 1.25 .
Saito engines are easy to adjust, reliable, powerful and can use fuel 15/18 with 100% synthetic oil with no problems. I use Wildcat 15/18 2&4 cycle on mines at least 10 years. A good partner for a Saito is a perry VP-20 pump . It will run like swiss watches, absolutely fantastic.

YS are fantastic, currently I have 4 , 1 - 63 , 2 - 91 and 1 - 1.10 , but definitely not for beginners in 4 strokes.
The fuel of the YS is more demanding, 20/20 is expensive , and the engine is much more difficult to regulate, but its performance is unmatched.
