How do you guys start those big 4 stroke motors???
I just bought a hanger 9 cap 232, and I can't use my starter for it cuz it won't turn over the engine. It is a tower hobbies 12V heavy duty starter running off a lawn mower 12 volt battery.
Someone recommended that I get another 12 volt battery and wire them in series, giving me 24 volts and 4 times the cranking power (power goes up by the square of volts, he told me).
Anyway, what do you think of this setup? Any tips on possibly hand starting it? It really is getting a pain in the butt to get that motor to start. Please help
thank you,
brian

I use a planetary geared starter for 1.40 YS motors. It runs off 10 1700mah nicad cells in the base of the starter. It turns over big motors with ease, yet still cranks fast enough for small 25Fx type motors.
I can't recall the name of it, but its available from Central Hobbies.

Smartman, I regularly start my Saito 1.80 with a chicken stick on 1-3 flips. The secret is to get it good and wet with fuel. she should kick right over. I also use a Hanger 9 HD starter running off a Lawn & Garden battery when I need it.

What Splais said. My Saito 120 starts easily with the back-flip or backward spinner flip. The idea is to bounce it off the compression. I don't even own a starter. Never needed it.

Hello; I have an old Magnum starter that has never failed to start any engine large or small, unless the battery is down on charge, when I might need to help it along with a little flick to get things turning. I also have a Sullivan high torque starter, but I have never used it. I use a 7 amp hour motorcycle battery that fits in my flight box.
I quite often hand start my larger engines using the tekneek discribed above; get it good and wet by priming then spin teh end of teh spinner backwards with a two finger flip. If it fires and doesn't start, I prime it again before I try it again.

(power goes up by the square of volts, he told me).
Power (Watts) = Volts x Amps

Assuming the circuit is DC and the motors resistance remains constant, if you double the voltage you will also double the current. Power also equals Current X Current X Resistance. Either way you get power quadrupled. Doesn't really matter, what the starter needs is torque, not power output.

The saito 180's have so much compression with the throttle opened at a fast idle, so the trick is to put your idle trim all the way down so your throttle is almost completely closed. Then your starter should be able to turn it over, when you get the motor turning over advance the throttle trim and it should start. They like to be wet as stated above but I would not recommend flip starting that motor. The Kavan's are very good starters and it will start that 180. Give it a try and report back with your results.

V = I*R (ohms law)
or
I = V / R
therefore
P = V * ( V / R )
or
P = V^2 / R
... so, indeed, it does increase with the square of voltage.
another way of expressing it is P = I^2 * R
If you double the voltage applied across a resistance the current will also double. Double the voltage * double the current = four times increase in power.
Of course, a motor is not a simple resistance, and batteries can't double there current output without some drop in output voltage... so what you get in the end is... I'd guess more than double power, but less than four times... dunno, I'd have to think about it more.
I've read around here that connecting a starter up to a large nicad pack will help (compared to a small lead acid gel cell). Say, an 10 or 12 cell pack (large cells). You'd need cells that can deliver large currents (i.e. several 10's of amps) - such as those used in electric planes.
Hand starting is more economical.

I use a Sullivan Dynatron on a 12v lawn mower battery. I starts my Saito 180's and YS140's with out any issues.The trick is not to start the engine right on the compression stroke. This allows the starter to develop some torque before it hits that compression stroke.

Just use the bounce start method. Turn the prop backward until you get to compression, connect plug power and bounce the prop smartly against the compression. I use this method from .26's right up to 120's with 98% success.

what you should do is check your connections between your battery and your clips/power panel. the clips on the starter that connect to the battery seem to have a problem (well at least mine do, have the same starter) of getting enough juice to the starter. i havnt solved this problem because i only turn over .91 sized engines...it does but only just.
what i was thinking was see if you could buy/steal actual clips (you know the bolt on ones that go around the entire battery lead not just touch it) from a lawnmower/car/atv/ect and attach the starter to those

The initial post on this thread was one year ago yesterday, does anyone wonder if the IP got his engine running? Care?
I fear that he simply left the hobby.
