Default Can I use RTV to seal the Carb on OS 55AX?

Hey guys! I am in the process of rebuilding my GP Escapade after pretty violent dirt nap. Anyway, as I was reinstalling the motor I noticed that the little rubber o-ring that seals the carb on my OS 55AX was missing. Probably fell off while I was cleaning the all the dirt from the motor. My question is can I just use some RTV sealant to seal the carb or do I need to get a new seal for it? I am at a standstill right now and I dont want to sit around waiting for a new seal to come in. I can't seem to find one online anyways. Thanks for the help!

It MAY work, but I'd be off to find a new O-ring if it were me!

I'd get the closest sized O-Ring I could find to fit the bottom of the carb, AND use RTV on the top and bottom of the o-ring. I squeeze down on the carb while tightening it to get the best possible seal. I seal the bottom of the carb and the backplates on all of my engines before I ever run them. Eliminates the chance of an air leak down the road.

you can use it, consider it a temporary fix....just make sure you dont et any get inside the engine... it will foul up your glow plugs fast....

most hardware stores sell o rings

if you can do a neat of enough job with silicone sealant or liquid gasket maker material, it will last a couple of years if you do a good job........... make sure to clean ALL oil residue off before you apply anything

Well just found this.

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...2&I=LXCN01&P=K

This looks to be the right seal for my application. It doesen't list the 40J Carb as one of the capatible carbs but it was listed with the carb body in the parts section for the 55AX. Any thoughts?

Measure the throat of your carb and see. But do you not have a hardware store nearby that sells basic plumbing stuff? When I need a seal, I take the carb in there and find the closest one that will stay on. At 15 cents each I can buy a lifetime supply for what that one from Tower costs before shipping and also have it today. It's just a seal and the size isn't super critical.

If you have a ACE Hardware store nearby, you can get a replacement O ring from them
Also Harbor Freight Tools sells boxes of O ring assortments too.
Many auto parts stores have O rings but it depends on the mood of the sales people and how busy they are as to how well they will help you.
Another source is your local small engine repair shop.

Tru, while loading the brain files this away, if you use RTV go to a NAPA store and get Ultra Copper, it does the same job but does not contain the corrosive ascetic acid.

AFAIK, all RTV silicones give off Acetic acid as it cures. After 24 hrs, the sealant should be fully cured and there shouldn't be any more acid given off. Mind you, acetic acid is the acid in vinegar. IMO not much to worry about. I've used clear bath silicone, red high temp, black high temp, and the copper high temp. None of them damaged the engine in any way.

The nitric acid residue from the nitromethane is going to be more caustic to the engine than the silicone curing agents.

Just my highly taxed opinion.

Yes the stuff works great. My dad told me it was mainstream on the older engines when the machining wasn't as good.

The UltraCopper does not contain ascetic acid, that's why it is recommended by Clarence Lee.

The UC has one weekness, it won't stand up to Diesel use, it just sort of goes away.
