Hey radial men and women....anybody going to Toledo next week? You will be able to see and touch all the radials and get ideas for planes to match. I think Hobby Lobby still offers a gorgeous Waco with silver wings and an orange fuselage that would be great with the 7-77. -Tom

Tom - I just looked at the Waco. Do you know for sure the cowl would fit over the 7-77?
Looks like a great airplane for ir.

Galen, Good question. You might call Hobby Lobby and ask the ID diameter. I think the size of the plane matches the engine well OR no cowl!?? -Tom

I ran my 9-99 yesterday and seems to run ok, but no.5 cyl. runs very cool to the touch even when running, so I checked the plug and it did have oil in it, after blowing out the oil, seem to glo pretty good, when I put it back in and restarted the engine it still seem to run very cool to the touch when running, trying to find some info on the thread to a solution all the other cyl. were pretty much even on the temp. my tach.meter quit working so not sure what my 24x12x2 is turning, had a real challenge setting the high and low speed needle, low seems to be almost all the way out, high seems to be backed way out too, but got it to run reliably without glo heat on, will run it more today and get more info.-Steve

Steve, A trick! With the engine running without a collector ring and the glow on, put your finger tight on the cold cylinder exhaust pipe and it will soon fire up and get hot of course. I know that sounds crazy but it works. The high speed needle will be all the way out on high oil during break in. Lesser oil = richer so when you decrease the oil content it will be able to run properly with the needle screwed in to a "normal" position. Use fat tubing and have the tank nearby. A few runs later and the cylinder will become more reliable. You will be amazed at how much more power the engine will have with all the cylinders firing. -Tom

To Clarify; The 7-35, 7-77 and 9-99 are glow, the 160 and 260 are spark ignition. -Tom

Hey whooooohaaaaa, what one plug does, makes a real difference, your right Tom, the #5 cyl. that was cool only turned out to be a bad plug ( even though it would glo on the other glo driver), WOW, it has come alive and runs great this is my third tank of fuel and finally runs super, taking the temp. at idle show each cyl. around 128 to 132 degrees, I did take some videos of it running ( on my cell phone) and sent them to my email, but can`t seem to open them up on my email for some reason it is in the wrong format, trying to figure that out, now I can experiment with the props and get some data on RPM and size and so on. the breakin fuel is 9 1/2% oil and 7 1/2% nitro, after I run out the other 3 gal. I will then use the fuel I ordered from Ritches Brew at 7 1/2/% oil and 5% nitro

I fired up the 9-99 radial today and ran the 24x12x2 xoar prop and got 5,550 rpm. and 28 lbs. of thrust not to bad, and then put on the xoar 24x10x2 and turned 6,420 rpm, and got 28 1/2 lbs, of thrust, and out of curiosity put the Biela 24x10x4 and only got 3,630 rpm and got 22 lbs of thrust and this was without adjusting the carb for that prop, also put on the 23x14x4 biela and got 3,600 rpm and only 18 lbs of thrust also without adjusting the carb.
and I also video taped the engine running ,but can`t seem to upload the video, seems the format is not acceptable on RCU so, not sure how to send the the video, I `ll try later to figure this out....................Steve

I just ordered a CMP 80", 50 cc size Zero for my Evolution 7-77 radial engine. Sounds as though the cowl will be a tight fit but I will just have to find a way to make it work.

my corsair cowl around the engine is about 1/16 of an inch or less, but not touching the rocker arms, I put extra screws in the cowl so it won`t move, it is now ready to maiden on this engine , it has 50 or so flights on the plane with the Saito 450 and it flew OK but hope to get a little more out of this engine, just waiting for good weather -Steve

Steve, On your 9-99 that 5500 rpm figure is rather impressive, a full 300 greater than my 9-90 which in reality is substantially more power. Of course there is great variability in props but hey enjoy it! -Tom

I am probably going to use the 24x12x2 for the first flight, I ordered a 22x12x3 and will see what I get with it, I am a little concerned about the 24x10x2 rpm over revving when in the air when it unloads. (it was 6,400 on the ground), so I think the 2, 4 bladed props I bought the 24x10x4 and the 23x14x4 will be too much for that engine, so I will list these for sale, (although they do look good for static display), but this will not be a hangar queen, this corsair is for full assault sorties Ha, anyway, again just waiting for the good weather -Steve

Hi Heli-NuBee

I'm not sure you want to see these photos. The cowl is pushed over the engine as far as it will go and is tight. The prop driver is about 3/4" inside the front edge of the cowl. The engine really needs to go another 1.5" forward, but the cowl tapers even more towards the front edge.

The CMP Zero will only just accept the ASP/Magnum 5cyl and the Saito 325R5 which I have for my Zero, on the list-to-do one of these days... There are YouTube videos of both engines in the Zero.

Something to think about...

Hey RossG,

Thanks for the pictures. Mine will probably be even tighter because I have the exhaust colletor ring. That is a bit disappointing but I will just have to find a way. Nitro Planes would not or could not give me any information about the cowl diameter of the Zero. I went by the fact others have installed radials in that airplane as you indicated. (The CMP Zero will only just accept the ASP/Magnum 5cyl and the Saito 325R5 which I have for my Zero, on the list-to-do one of these days... There are YouTube videos of both engines in the Zero). Thanks for your input.

Hey RossG,

Thanks again for your input. I was able to get in touch with Nitro Planes soon enough this morning to cancel my order for the 80" Zero. I will be more careful next time about purchasing before I confirm that the pland cowl will fit.

Hi Heli-NuBee

Glad to hear it. I was hoping you would/could do that, but didn't want to be the one to suggest it, if you know what I mean... Plan B was to suggest you get a Saito R5 to fit the plane :-)

Don't worry about the exhaust rings, either EVO-UMS or Keleo, they are both smaller than the engine O.D. see pics.

Somebody else makes a slightly bigger Zero that I'm sure will take the EVO77. The one I saw was white(?). There is a YT vid of a Zero with the OS Sirius7 which is about the size of the EVO77.

Hi guys. Just came across your forum.I have a Evo 777 in a 85" EMS Corsair.Hope to maiden it in May.Really like the engine and the sound out of the Keleo ring is awesome.Had to adjust all valves before first startup because the intakes were opening on compression.Someone posted that they ran each engine at the factory, must have missed mine.Broke it in with a 22x12 two blade.Am burning methyl hydrate from Home Depot and synthetic oil from Cool Power at 7%.I get about 5700 rpm on the bench.Using an on board glow from Microsens,Austria.Glow batt. is a 5000mah 1s lipo and a balancer to give the lower cylinders more juice if it senses a wet plug.Heres a couple picks and a link to the engine run.

I am looking forward to this maiden!! Good luck. What is your planes weight? I have never heard of methyl hydrate. Sounds like something bad for engines????? -Tom

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xpb...er-77cc_people The planes weight is 30 lbs. 4 oz. Methyl hydrate is just another name for methanol.Home Depot sells it in the paint department for $11/4 liers.Heres a link to the engine vid.
