Hey redball, two years ago I had a standoff bolt strip out of the backplate. I made a bottoming tap of the next larger size bolt that would fit through the tubes. Worked well. Let me know if this happens I can either send you the tap or send me the backplate and I can tap it out for you. -Tom

Hi Maxam, (TOM) I have sent you a couple of PMs but I'm not sure that you have received them. This forum doesn't seem to offer the option to send an e-mail in their new format.

OK, Maxam (Tom) Sorry for misusing this forum but I can't seem to get info to you any other way. My question is about my Saito 200 R3 radial. I have quite a few flights on this engine (probably 50 or more) and it has always run well until last week at our annual war bird event. I could not get the engine to run on all three cylinders at full throttle. It would run fine with glow support at 1/2 or less throttle and would run well for a short time at full throttle until it dropped a cylinder. I tried adjusting the high speed needle but it did not help. I am at a loss why this engine started dropping a cylinder at full throttle. Do you have any thoughts? Thanks for your input and sorry guys for using the UMS forum about my Saito.

Hi everybody! Some days ago had the maiden flight of my Great planes Stearman with the evolution 7-35. The engine ran beautifully and the plane flies very scale, perfect combination!
You can see a nice video of the maiden here http://youtu.be/X8JvLRyOgK8 edited by my good friend Andrea.
Hope you like it

I am in the process of completing a Ziroli 87 in. Stearman. I have installed a UMS 9-99 and would like advice on the fuel tank choice and plumbing. I was motivated to buy the 9-99 after reading Maxam's posts and I intend to follow his advice to the letter. I would like to be able to easily drain the tank at the end of the day. With the usual 3 line system this requires standing the plane on it's nose to get all of the fuel out thru the over flow fitting.( at least the way I install them) I don't like using the available fuel fitting that insert a valve between the clunk line and the carb. I am thinking about adding a fourth line to the bottom rear of the tank strictly for defueling. Can a brass tube be safely mounted to the tank using silicone adhesive. I am thinking about using a 30 ounce tank. with separate fill, vent , carb and defuel lines. Any thoughts from anybody are most appreciated. I would like to see what Maxam uses to ease defueling.
Many thanks,

Hi J. Thank you for your confidence. I use a 24x12 on my 9-90. A prop like this will keep the plane flying well at low throttle settings. I have been using a 24oz tank and a 30 would be great too. To keep things simple I use two clunks, one for the engine and the other to drain the tank. The third is the overflow. Keep the tank close to the firewall, top of the tank a quarter to a half inch above the carb. (not a problem with a tail dragger). Fat fuel line, fat tank aluminum tubing and a clunk with a big hole. The plastic used in these blow molded tanks is very resistant to bonding with any type of glue or sealer. Please do not put a hole in the tank! -Tom

I would like to use my large electric starter to start my UMS 9-99. I plan to use a 24/12 prop. Can anyone suggest a prop hub, nut or spinner that would be appropriate on an 87 in. Stearman.

If you're not competing in scale contests, a 1 1/2" TruTurn prop hub would do the trick. Will need to drill out the thick "washer" from 3/8" to 10mm - TruTurn can do this for you. Or you can order the item from Hobbylinc for a bit less, and drill it out yourself (it's only 0.5mm wider)..
