Cox all the way. I've had one for over 29 years. I expect it will be around for another 29 years. I put fuel injection on mine first, followed by a supercharger I made out of a roll of old nickels.

RE: Best all around 40 size engine
Hi!
As I sell MVVS engines I would probably say MVVS but to be honest the best two-stroke sport .40 engine today are the Kyosho GX.40!
This is same engine as ASP.40 made by Sanye but with a little larger exhasut opening in their silencer for better performance.
I have several of these engines i my Q-500 stable and all perform extreamly vell The are reliable and powerfull and throttle perfect.
These engines run as well on 80/20 fuel provided you remove either one or two of the head shims.
RPM on a 10x6 RAM prop is around 14000rpm on 80/20 fuel and Nova Rossi 4 glow plug. A little less rpm using OS 8 or Enya 3.
The first time I saw one of these engines were 8-10 years ago when a newcomer appered at our club with a Kyosho "Calmato " .40 trainer which had a 12x6 prop mounted. Naturally I said to him that that prop was way to big for his .40 engine, but as he had no other prop with him we went ahead and flew the plane. Was I suprised when I saw how well the plane behaved! You bet!
That little engine coped with that large prop with ease!! The fuel used then was 16% nitro but provided you remove one or two of the head shimms you can run less cosly 80/20 fuel.

RE: Best all around 40 size engine
I've owned various sizes of engines from 0.15 to 1.60 manufactured by OS, Fox, Enya, and K&B for over twenty years. My best (meaning-most reliable) results have always been with Fox. The fact that they are American made is a bonus.

It's hard to wrong with any of the modern 40/46 size 2-strokes. OS, Super Tigre, Thunder Tiger, Magnum all make good engines. I'm sure I left a few brands out but they're all pretty reliable and easy to operate.

Sounds to me like you want a good entry level engine that will be user friendly in a trainer and then make a good engine for a sport plane. For this purpose I'm going to give the thumbs up to the O.S. 46LA. You can get into one of these engines for less than 100 bucks, and OS is very reliable. I had this engine in a Goldberg Eagle 2 Trainer and it was perfect.
I have a Super Sportster 40 with an OS 46AX and it is pretty fast. The 46LA would be a good engine for the Super Sportster if you wanted to transition into that plane.
Good Luck, and welcome back... Don't forget to help your son build one from a kit!

HI
you could look for an ASP 40 in the buy and sell here
you would get better results using a 46 or 51 53 size engine in a 40 size trainer
more power will get you out of trouble always
i like the ST 51 (requires more break in run time ) and do not overlook the EVO 46very powerful 46 and performance is not known by the masses yet
a swap meet is also a great place to pick up a used engine cheep
i am a bit surprised how many suggested a fox engineas in my 22 years of flying RC i have seen very few use these engines at the flying fields
had a Fox 46 Sportsterthat was given to me-great power to weightbut i had to do so many things to keep it running and together i could not recommend the enginebut it ran real strong and for a long time when it ran
you need to know how to handle glo engines if you choose to use the less expensive glo engines like asp-magnum and ST-OS will always require less difficulty to keep running and be easier to operate over all
the new AX series put out amazing power (OS"s most powerful series ever )-more than the second best legendary FSR series of 20 years ago
flying two cycle glo for 26 years

You got that right.
Problem is, I don't buy forty-sized anything engines these days. I don't compete in sport pylon, so I have no use for a .40. If I'm going to carry the weight, I want the most displacement possible, which leads me to the .52 and larger sized "forty-sized" engines.
I like the Magnum and ASP .52 engines for the low side of the cost curve and Enya for the high side.

My vote goes for the Enya 50SS. This is a ringed engine with twin needles and ball bearings. Good power, good transition, light weight, very user friendly and very reliable. My experience with Enya engines has been flawless, and this particular engine is I think one of their best.
BTW, I am one of the unlucky ones who had a bad experience with Magnum. That was about 5 years ago and I have not given them a second chance.

RE: Best all around 40 size engine
I have a few Enya SS-40 engines and they are great. Enya's are like Fox engines they just don't wear out barring a nasty mishap of course.
But a new Enya engine can be expensive due to how much the value of the Yen has appreciated over time.
The MVVS engines I have used all worked well, so no complaints there at all. The internet has made it possible to buy and use more exotic foreign made engines than ever before. Before the internet came along, many years ago I remember drooling and coveting many engines made overseas (not in the USA) that were difficult to near impossible to get. The model magazines would review exotic engines (at least to us over here) that we couldn't get, so that was always a bummer.
I should say a Rossi engine is another choice, Rossi made .40, .45, and .53 size engines that are all great and powerful runners.
So as I see it, you have Fox, Enya, MVVS, Jett and Rossi engines at the top of the choice list.
Fox and Jett are made in the USA of course.
I haven't played with one yet, but the Norvel .40's are held in high regard by those guys who have them too.
They tend to be really small and lightweight in comparison with some of the big .40 size engines the others make.

Jaka means 80% alcohol and 20% oil. No nitromethane. Common fuel for every where outside the US. This evolved from the high cost of nitro in the past and even now every where outside the US. Many many years ago because of nitros low cost here we became addicted to it.
Love the smell of nitro in the morning and it will cover up for ham handed carb adjustments and poor plug selection.

I am amazed that Rossi hasn't been mentioned before. They are still being made and readily available. Has been and still is one of the finest engines made but a bit pricey.
Webra was also but is gone now

Towersells a few of their control line engines. Go to their web site at www.foxmanufacturing.com.But give them a call. They do not keep the web site updated and have offers and engines that are not on the web site.

RE: Best all around 40 size engine
i would like to mention that the OS .50sx-hyper is a great engine for any .40 size plane. And when the time comes for a model that needs more snort, it will do its job. After the trainer and low wing aerobat, stick it in a profile 3der and it will put other engines to shame. i dont ,know if theyre made anymore...

Where is the best place to buy a Fox engine in the .45 class. Since it is made in USA I think I will pick one up instead of a OS .46. Its time this nation starts supporting our own again.

A few years back my nephew and I both had Easy Fly 40 trainers. I had a Tower .40 on mine and he had an OS .40 FP (?). Mine flew, his didn't.
IMHO OS is the most overrated, underperforming engine out there.

RE: Best all around 40 size engine
magnum .46 and .52 are good engines (after 2-3 gallonsof breakin)
os 46 and 55 engines are decent, not the smoothest running but they run well 90% of the time, also ready to fly out of the box
supertigre gs51 is very nice, good idle, throttleing and transition
gms .47 is my personal favorite, if i had to pick an engine to trust my life on in the air it would be my gms .47 the thing runs amazing, idles very low (1800 rpm), and throttles perfectly, i havnt had a deadstick in 5 gallons worth of running (it's on a 3d plane)

If I had to make a choice it would be a multiple choice.
The K/B Screamin' 48
The Enya SS series
TT Pro
All the others seem to run well....for a while. Then things begin to slowly go south.
You can't beat an Enya. They are just like the "energizer bunny". They will run forever!
O.S. makes an unbeatable carb for any 40 size upgrade.
My favorite all time 40 size engine is the vintage Supertigre "S" series 45 ABC and the Blueheads.
Amazing engines.
The vintage K/B metric series 7.5cc and 6.5cc were trend setters but not your typical engine for 40 size applications.

RE: Best all around 40 size engine
My vote goes to supertigre 40 I think it has more power than a os 40 la and is about the same price it just needs a little tuning on the low end needle I have about 5, 3 40's 1 45 and 1 51 all of them run great and no bearing problems.
