Kimhoff,
What procedure did you use to remove the cam bearings, or any bearing for that matter, that are "dead-ended". By that I mean, bearings that can only be accessed at one end and butted against a housing.

I did a Saito twin a few years ago that had a couple blind bearing pockets.

I heated the part up in the oven and slammed it against a board and the bearings fell out.

Sounds easy enough. Thanks.

I did exactly what w8ye did.  If heating in the oven doen't work you may need to get more localized with a torch.

All the bearings are out. The oven did the trick, although the rear cover cam bearing took a few slams. I thought I lost an alignment pin, but it was in the case. Whew!

I don't have the parts yet, but what is the procedure for installation? It looks to me that the cam and crank should go in the freezer, the bearings heated with a heat gun and then installed on the shafts. After that the case should be placed in the oven and the crank and cam in the freezer, followed by their installation in the case. Is that right?

Cold shrinks, heat expands.  Just use these principles to determine what needs to be coled and heated.  To get a bearing on a shaft cool the shatf and heat the bearing (in most cases cooling the shaft will allow a bearing at room temp to slid on.  If you are putitng the bearing in a case cool the bearing and heat the case.  I usually put the bearing on the shaft that rides in it and use this to guide the bearing into the case.

It seemed to me, as you just stated, that installing the bearings on the shaft first helps with aligment.

I finished the rebuild yesterday and ran the engine today. The design on the face of the connecting rod's big end has been changed from the rod I removed from the engine. They have added a groove around the rod's big end face on one side and I am guessing it helps with getting oil to the part that bears against the crank throw.

I replaced all the bearings and all the cam followers. Here is a link to the video:

By the way, of the five bearings that were removed and replaced, the rear cam bearing exhibited some drag and the intermediate crank bearing the same. The front cam bearing was the only one that looked absolutely pristine. The others had some discoloration but were solid in function.

Nice job.  Must be an old 160 if it did not have the groove.

I bought it used about seven years ago. No telling how long the guy had it.

I had it out today in the Cub. Three flights and no problems.
