ID this engines purpose?
this is obviously an OPS, and is a .29.
it has a carb although not shown.
what is needed is some help with what this engine may have been setup for.
WELL, i'll post pictures when the site is ready to allow them.

Doesn't mean much. People can bolt those parts onto any engine with a suitably long and thick crankshaft.
Boat engines are 99.9999999% of the time water cooled. This one isn't. That's why I think it's a DF engine.

RE: ID this engines purpose?
It looks like someone converted a speed .29 OPS airplane into a marine engine. Apparently they ran into a problem with finding a water cooled head or cylinder jacket for it then. I think someone wanted to use it as a boat engine, but never finished the project. They would have had to make a water cooled head and maybe a water cooled exhaust throttle for it. One can remove the flywheel and take the two ends and reverse them back to normal and have a nice rear intake, rear exhaust airplane engine for speed racing with control line again. For some competition events engines under .30 displacement are in one class and engines .30 or over are in another class.
it looks like OPS made three different .29 engines at the time. Two of them could turn 26,500 RPMs and another was 14,000 rpms.

RE: ID this engines purpose?
earl,
what you just said makes a lot of sense.
the owner of this engine is the same person who inherited what i would call a modelers dream from his uncle who was an avid Free Flighter.
with that said, the FF'er's name was Joe Lobbia who was a good friend of my family and bought almost every competition model we had at one time or another.
one of the models had an OPS 29 RR and most likely Joe acquired this engine for use of it's parts.
mystery solved, thx.
