Wow the Magnum .91 is on sale for $129 are Magnum as good as say Thunder Tiger? There seems to be some supporters here...any thoughts, I have no experience with Magnum.
Cheers

Mixed reviews at our field, some are OK while others never seem to run right. I'd say go with the TT, 90% of their gremlins have been worked out.

I agree based on my personal experience.

I have never seen a Magnum .91 RFS not run good, and I have owned several. I would buy the Magnum anyday before the others. You can take the spare money and buy a case of good fuel with the difference.

In my experience I would only buy a Magnum new from a reputable dealer in case you get a crappy one.

I bought a TT75fs this spring from Tower and ran it in on the bench and the first time I flew it, it hardened off and I landed I richened it a bit and
on taxing out it stopped with a bang, I returned it to tower who said it was over revved and that why it went kapput.
I was flying a Storch not what you would call model that needed much in the way of reves.
I think I will go back to  my HK for my ASPs at half the price

I went with the prop reccomended in the instructions for scale planes,
I know it's unusual, but I tend to read and follow the instructions

Hobby Services tend to find excuses. They do the same when OS engines fail. Often they do the warranty work then complain that the user did not take care of it.

The BREAK-IN prop for TT 75FS is 12.5x6, according to manual. They also recommend some fuel with castor oil in it.

Yes, on my TT 91 the break in prop was a 11-10 or 11-11 and they said not to rev past 6000. To do so could cause damage to the rod bushing, so the pop could have been a thrown rod. One should run it so rich with the large prop that it does not go over the RPMlimit at full throttle. I believe Saito has the same RPM limit during inital break in.

Another reason Isay to follow the manufactures break in instructions and not any proceedure or other some may advocate here.

However he said he ran it on the bench and this was after that. He didn't say if he followed break in instructions or not. Possibly he only ran it a short time, not long enough to break in the rod.

There's no telling, maybe he just got a lemon. This warranty business is really hard to nail down. Some people abuse them so bad and get away with it, and some honest folks just get shafted.

Yea I ran it in on bench followed instructions used a tachometer with the running in prop and then changed to a flying prop.
I am hoping I got a lemon and the replacement is up to the task

Well, good luck. I didn't have a single hiccup with the TT 75FS. It was also my first 4-stroke, but it was very easy to set up.

Iguess since mine is so excellent I cant imagine a bad one but having been in quality control in a previous life Iunderstand how easy it is to make a klunker.

Quality Control? Did you like it? I would jump off a cliff if I had that job!!! I guess it takes a special type of person to do that kind of work.

Iloved it but it puts you at odds with a bunch of short sighted people more interested in numbers than quality, its hard to convince them that if you make quality products its easy to make them and actually saves time and increases production. Trying to push junk through a production line is counter productive.
So it paints a target on your back and Isuffered for it.

Sorry to hear it. It's the old adage:

'If we don't control it, the quality will get out of control.'

Well, I guess we better not ask what company that was. It would be too damning.

I think I will go back to my HK for my ASPs at half the price
As I mentioned before, ASP (AKA Magnum AKA SC AKA Revolution) are the best value in the market today.
The are VERY reliable and easy to run.
You don't need to go for OS or TT while you can get a great engine for small money (especially at HobbyKing).

Of course, if if you going PRO (F3A competition), get yourself Saito or better YS...

Just my two cents.

If you are going to buy a ASP/Magnum/etc.. engine, get it from Hobby People when they have it on sale like right now. The 90 is at $130 and the 52 is at $100. At least you can get good service from them.

Thanks for the heads up on the 52 on sale,
Put one in my cart only to find they don't appear to ship to Ireland :-(

Of all the engines I have, Magnum and ASP have been the most troublesome. The second is probably the early HP's.

While troublesome, most of the time the ASP and Magnum have been Ok. Certainly worth the price. However I will no longer buy them because I have sworn of products from China when I can buy products elsewhere.
