Airplanes for Magnum .52 FS
I am considering buying a Magnum 0.52 FS. What airplanes in terms of weight or wingspan are good fit for this engine?
Is this engine comparable in performance to a OS 0.46 FX 2-Stroke?

In my opinion the Mag52FS is a good replacement for a 40 size engine but not a 46. Ithink a good plane for the Mag 52 is something light like the Uproar from Great Planes. Maybe the Escapade too.

You also have to look at how a particular engine is going to balance on a particular plane without adding weight anywhere. How much does it weigh compared to say a .46AX?
If you can find a Sig 4* 40 it would make a nice light combo.
Thanks,
Ernie

RE: Airplanes for Magnum .52 FS
I have a GP Dazzler with an OS .46-FX w/APC 11x5 with an overall weight of 5.0 pounds and unlimited vertical performance. The Dazzler has 0.5 oz of lead at the tail for correct balance. I have been operating only 2-stroke engines in all my four airplanes.
I have been thinking on this Magnum .52 FS to be my first flying 4-stroke engine. I have larger displacement Magnums (0.91 to 1.8) that I have been buying for future projects but none of them are installed yet.
So, if the math is correct, the OS 46-FX weights about 17.3 oz w/muffler. The Magnum 52 weight is 15.7 oz w/mufller. The difference will probably be equivalent to removing the 0.5 oz of lead the Dazzler has at the tail. As long as I can get similar RPMs with 11x5 prop, I should be okay in the performance of the Dazzler. Then, I can get to know more about operating 4-strokes before I have my TF Spit 60 on the air with either Magnum 0.91 or 1.2 I have.
Thanks all.

Good point, I would have to say...find a prop that would give me same performance as the 11x5 in the 46-FX.
I will start with the break-in prop 12x6 as recommended by Magnum and then switch to 12x5 if I need to.

My favorite prop for 52 size four strokes is the 11X7.5 . 4S engines dont rev up as high as 2S engines so a little higher pitch is a good idea in most cases.

If you get an Uroar or Dazzler (very similar!) try mounting the engine a little "more that" horizontal so the muffler comes out right down below. Mine was slick that way with an OS 32 and mac's muffler. They are fun but do not like to knife edge well at all.

Goldberg tiger 2 with that engine swinging a 12x5 is a perfect fit and an absolute blast. Well mine is built as a tail dragging beasty. I am not sure if the stock trike gear would allow the 12x5 ....

I dont know how it compares to an OS 52 FS, but thats the size in my Kadet LT40 swinging an 11x7.5 and it has just the right amount of power. I also picked up the Magnum 52 and the 91 from HP, they have been on sale for 3 weeks now.

Magnum sale ends this weekend, June 30th. I bought 4 engines from them this month: 2 x .91, 1 x .70 and 1 x .52. I am considering another engine this weekend. I have been waiting long time for these prices. The .91 is the best price of all.

I was not happy with the last Magnum I bought. The hobby is for enjoyment, buying engines at discount prices is not worth it if it brings frustration.

Magnums are OK if you buy them new with a warranty and dont mind getting a clunker once in a while, some of us are willing to do the bench testing to save the cash.

The warranty was no good as I could not prove that the needle assemblybroke becaue of brittle metal as apposed to simply turning too hard. I had the opposite problem with an ASP engine years after the warranty was expired. The soft metal of the carb base broke with just a small twist of the carb clinch bolt.

Try the Phoenix Funstar with the Magnum 52. I have an OS 52 Surpass II in mine and it's a perfect match with a weird prop...the 12.75x3.25 or whatever it is, lol. Jon
