How good of an engine is the thunder Tiger Pro 46?
I am thinking about getting a thunder Tiger Pro 46 engine for a trainer I have. I have never owned a Thunder Tiger engine and was wondering how good of an engine is thier pro 46?
Any advice is really welcomed. Good or bad. Thanks

Thanks for the postive answer. That is what I was hoping to hear. I am going to order one from Tower Hobbies and hope to have it hear by Friday so I can fly Saturday. I will be using 10% Omega fuel that is a castor/synthic blend

I have one that's been in five different airframes. Has been crashed twice and had a new piston & sleeve in that time with many years of good service since. The needle valve stem did develop an air leak (s) so I swapped it for a Perry carb. It pulls my Saratoga 40 and floats around beautifully. I'd buy another if I needed a .46 size. I run 10%.

11 x 5 APC prop on theTT Pro-46 and you'll be tall dog on garbage day with the Saratoga. It's a pleasureable plane to fly slow and will cut up the sky well if you feel frisky. Does any Aresti maneuver well and smoothly. I fly mine on wheels, floats and skis.
And it looks good on the ground or in the air. Highly recommended. For some unknown reason it's one of very few models I have owned that I can leave the wheel pants on at our grass field.

Irun mine in a Nexstar trainer with 15% fuel a cold Merlin 2006 plug and an 11X6 prop, great combo. Lots of power.

If you're planning on using the 11/5 to fly with most of the time, I would put the first few runs on it with a 10/5, not a 10/6. You want a slightly lighter than normal load for the first few flights, so you can run it slightly rich but at similar RPM to where you'll be using it.
I don't have a .46, but I have 4 of the TTpro .40's, and they're great engines for the money.

I ran mine in on a 10x6 initially but didn't know any better. Went to a 10x6 cut to 7.5x6 at 17,000rpm because of the Jett muffler. I would run it with a 9x6 but richen it 1000rpm off peak on that prop. That is if it were me. These tapered bore engines need to be ran fast to get max power from it. See Dub Jett's website for his break in technique. That's the method I now use.
My engine is down on power because of my initial ignorance. I'm down about 1000rpm of what it's capable of.

You also don't want it too rich.. Just a little. Too rich, the temp is too low and you can cause mooted piston wear than optimal. Even after many runs its good to have a little pinch at tdc when its cold

My .46Pro was nib when I got it (blue box, straight NV) but it had little to no pinch. After 2 gallons, it's hard to turn the prop driver by hand and get it around compression. With a prop, if not careful, will bite the knuckles hard.
My engine is dead reliable, and backflip starts with a good prime 99% of the time. I feed mine 5%nitro20%castor and it turns 16,400-16,700rpm on a 9.5x7N pylon prop narrowed to 9.25x7 on the Jettstream muffler.
Here is what my 46 is on:

I have a TT Pro 46 on a Big Stik 40 and it pulls it very, very well. Matter of fact with an APC 11-5 prop it is so fast the guys at the field were afraid I was going to pull the wing off. It will climb at almost straight up for as long as you want to go up. Its my best and most favorite engine. This is the second one I have owned and think they are as good as an OS engine. I have owned several TT engines and every one has been an excellent performer. Buy with confidence.

The manual says to break it in with a 10x6 and fly it with a 10x7. But it also says to use 20% castor/synthetic blend for break-in. I strongly suggest you use the recommended break-in but you should easily be able to switch to an 11x6 for normal flying.

Hi!
Very good engine!
Use a 11x6 direct from the start! Graupner G-Sonic or RAM (APC works good too). No fancy running in on smaller props is necessary.Just run it slighly rich the first 4-5 tanks.
5% nitro is just fine! Anything more is just a waste of Money!
