I know most of you guys are aircraft guys so this may not mean much to you, but I got my hands on a quite-rare Novarossi .21 Buggy engine that was in the hands of Ron. Paris. Ron was a well known engine modifier for racers all over. He died in October of 2001 based on the information I have found. The engine came off Novarossi's production line in 2001 sometime so it had to have been close to when he passed. So I haven't been able to find any information about this engine. The box is still sealed from Paris Racing so in case there is a big collectors value to it, I'm not ready to break the seal yet. It was very expensive when the hobby shop priced it back in around 2003 when they got it. Now that there are only a small handful of NIB examples around, it's gotta be worth more than I paid for it. Has an intake chamber in the backplate for having a reserve of fuel when upside down on the track, and it has a vacuum port under the carb but I don't know what it's for yet. I've not seen an engine quite like it.

Nice engine ...I have one of Ron's On Road Picco .21's...
That chamber in the backplate is sort of a built-in "Boost Bottle"...
Boost Bottles were the "in" thing for a while...sort of a reserve chamber to even out pressure / vacuum pulsation during extreme throttle applications IIRC...not sure if I have that right, but after a few years, the manuf. figured they were unnecessary...

There should be some info in the car engines section on them, and I just might have a look to refresh my memory. I've got an old O.S. with a bottle...but the Nickel sleeve wore out very quickly and.........(but that's another story, aye?)

The car guys weren't keen to share anything new, and I've found little about the Ron Paris version. I don't think Ron had his hands on my engine, I think he died before my engine was even manufactured. I opened the box.. :X

Yeah...you might as well get some use / enjoyment out of it huh!?

The age old debate of whether to let it be a shelf queen, or to actually use it for it's intended purpose...

Back years ago, I might have figured I would keep it pristine...but as I get older, I figure why shouldn't I get some use out of it! If it makes me happy...puts a smile on my face while using it for what it was made for....then that's better than it just being another dust collector on a shelf...IMO of course...

I have two glow engine cars too, an Ofna 1/8 scale 4wd buggy and an Associated RC10B2 with an OS12TR. Love em both.

This Novarossi is designed for a 1/8th scale off-road buggy with a bump starter. Being an old design, I haven't found a pullstart backplate and crankshaft for it. Doubt I ever will either.

If I don't get a buggy, I may convert my Jato to run a big block. Should rev at least 8k faster than the 3.3 that's in it now.

That could be interesting. I have not had the best luck with bump boxes, my OS12 on the RC10 requires one. I like a good pull starter.

Yeah, I don't use a bump box either but there is no way to start this engine without one. All my other rigs are Spinstart or pullstart. I have a Jato and Nitro Rustler with 3.3's and two Losi LST2's. One with a modified Mach 427 and the other is an SH .28.

If I had a monohull wet propped boat if consider converting it for marine use. Not thinking it would handle an air prop well. Crank is way too small.

You can use an air prop. You need a stepped nut, and make up a drive plate. The big carbs can get in the way of the prop. I did an Axial that I want to try sometime. The prop needs a bigger clearance hole in the front for the step. I thought for a boat that a big heatsink head may be quicker than dragging a tube in the water.

Is that one of those adapter prop nuts I see in the hobby shops? Haven't looked very closely at them.

Also, what's a typical prop size for a revver .21?

Actually now that I looked at it, I cut the shaft right off, and softened the crank, drilled and tapped it for 10-32. I made my own regular acorn nut. I did it a couple years ago. The F2D combat motors have a short shaft and stepped nut that works well. I will admit that it is impossible to get a regular prop ready at the field. I don't know where the stepped nuts are available other than straight from a Fora, or whatever dealer. They are a fine metric oddball thread. Got a pic here of the Fora. It would be similar for a car motor after cutting away the smooth part of the shaft where the clutch goes. I would imagine they are a 1/4 - 28 or 6mm thread. I cut it of so? I think a .21 prop, maybe a 7-6, 7-5. would be a good place to start. Piped, maybe a bit different. An airboat, maybe would like a bigger dia and less pitch? I think they like static thrust more than top end. Some of yours may differ from the pics I have seen of them.

I'll find out if a prop but fits the Nova. Doubtful though, it's pretty small. The Nova would have to be piped. I would like to find out how to stick my Enya 60-4C in an 1/8th scale 4x4 RC truck I got. I've see. OS .70 Ultimate's installed but I've no idea on what they did for the clutch.

Man, I want one of them lil nitro buggies, but every time I get a few bucks, goes straight into the planes. I'd have to find someone willing to trade one for something.

Any glow head fans out there needing a fixture to modify a glow head to accept glow plugs? Works for 09 heads. Screw in the head and drill out the center then tap for 1/4 32 thread. A lathe would be handy but can be done with a drill press.

You are better off with a lathe, and the original head, and drilling a 3/16" hole, then step drill with a 60 degree end, to .285" and tap with a M8 x .75 tap. That is the Turbo plug thread. This will not hurt the power like a 1/4" 32 plug will. The taps are a fairly standard size, and it is only a bit more work to get the taper to the right depth for the tapered seal to be flush. I won't use a regular plug in any motor under a .25 any more. It just hurts the performance too much.

Qualify? Heck, I think with all that, you can be a brotherhood. Welcome aboard, your number 78. Been kind of quiet here lately, but now and again there's something to talk about.

Don't have anything to talk about ..... Oh wait, I bought an electric quad while on vacation. I know, I had a weak moment. I came home, took the cap off a gallon of glow fuel, took some deep breaths. I feel so ashamed. Going to go fly this weekend with my fastest glow plane and try to get electric out of my head. Need to figure out how to mount 4 .049's in a quad !!!!!

#59 here. Look what followed me home tonight. Major screamage of the vintage variety. A Cox / K&B Conquest .15. It's got an OS .25SF carb for good breathing at high rpm. Should be great fun on something with about 250 sq. in. of wing and no wheels.

No need to feel ashamed. Electrics are good for that quick back-yard flight when you can't make it to the flying field and the weather is too good to pass up. We all do it.
