On one hand, ya gotta take it when you can get it, on the other, everyone needs some time to do what ever it is that makes em smile. I feel you though. I've been working some crazy hours myself. Not much time for anything else.

Hey Steve !! Whaaassuupp ?? Sorry been busy working on cars and spent 3 weeks vacation in Durango Colorado. I run a 12x4 AFP sport prop on my OS55ax. Had it in a seagull decathlon. Loved chopping the throttle. It was like putting on brakes in the air. Oh, bought a 1970 LS6 Chevelle while on vacation. Needs lots of work, but it is rust free. Got all the documentation with it. I am sure having a hard time deciding what color to paint it. Original color was forest green. I hate green..... Want to paint it corvette jet stream blue, just don't want it to lose value because it's not the original color. They only made 4,417 with the 454 450hp motor

Thanks Harry. Looking for another airframe now for that engine. The raven didn't go so well. Worst plane I ever came across. Oh well. Great little engine though.

Hey Glow Head Brothers! I have always been a 2 stroke glow guy, but recently got an OS 70 Surpass for an Escapade MX I am readying for the flight line. I would have thought that this motor would be fine in this plane with a 12x6 or 12x7, but looks like the recommendations lean more towards a 13" prop of similar pitch. Any suggestions or help from your experience?

I recently used a 12X7 Zinger Pro on mine in my new Sukhoi and it really hauled the mail. Any prop that will give you about 10,000 rpm static should be acceptable as long as it pulls the plane the way you want it to. The thing about small props and 4 strokes is you don't want to over rev the engine and hurt the fragile valvetrain so you use prop size to limit the static rpms. Testing is the key, I like to get a selection of props in the appropriate size range and fly each to see which one I like best. It isn't always the one I thought I would end up with.

You also might want to try a 13x5 or 13x6. I fly my 4 star 60 on an OS 70 with a 14x4 and get around 9400 rpm. It's rather slow, but has good vertical, and I like it that way. Your Escapade is smaller and needs more speed, so smaller props with more pitch are the way to go. The 12x7 and 13x5 should turn around 10,000 on the ground. The 12x7 would be faster, the 13x5 would climb better. A 13x6 will run about like my 14x4, but it will be faster in the air. You have to try them on the plane to find out what you like.

Thanks guys, good advice all around. I appreciate it. I ordered a 12x6, 12x8, 13x6 and 13x8 to test. I want the plane to pull strong, but not really looking for blazing speed.

No Harry, the raven isn't with us any more. She's in the fire pit now, resting, where she belongs. Jeez, what a POS. First maiden attempt, I had it balanced at 5 5/8 where seagull recommends. Didn't go so well. Second attempt, I balanced it at 5 inches, again, way tail heavy and more damage. Fixed that and balanced it at 4 1/2. This time it at least flew once around the pattern, if you'd call it flying. More like that nose high, wing rocking, uncontrolled , flight that we all see and go " oh, this ain't gonna be pretty!" And yep, it wasn't. I give up. No more time wasting with it. What a horrible airplane in my opinion. So my last CG was 1 1/8 ahead of where they said I should balance it. And still WAY tail heavy. Anyway, water under the bridge. On to the next.

hey Steve, sorry to hear of the demise of your raven... what of the 55? did it get messed up too? I had my first one on a seagull decathalon with a MA 12x6 prop and cartwheeled it off the wing tip on a take off stall, DUMB*****!!!, totaled the plane and broke the prop on both sides and packed the carb with dirt and grass. stripped the airframe and went home for the day... Anyway , when I did go to clean her up ,I stripped it down to the bare case. everything cleaned up ok , guess it quit running on impact, as the inside was almost spotless , so from there .as a precaution .I removed the bearings and upon inspection was surprised to see galling inside the outer race of the front bearing.

this was the second time this engine went in,first was on a twin from the guy that owned it before me, and all told this engine may have had a total of 20 flights on it. My point being , it pays to put in the effort to check, cause you never know.

OH, and by the way, after installing a new set of bearings , she run's perfect. I don't know if the damage I found was from my crash or his. I'd assume it wasn't from mine cause it just wasn't going all that fast. I didn't build up enough ground speed and had the wind at her back, and pulled up to hard, to soon. There's something to be said for lessons learned the hard way...

My philosophy is such that the best lessons learned in life come from the bigger mistakes one can make. I should know, I make mistakes all the time! You'd think I'd have it all figured of by now...... Someday......

No kidding about checking everything before putting it back in the air. I have done this since I was a kid, and I never put an engine in a plane without completely checking it inside. I will never understand the people who don't have knowledge of the inner workings of their power plants.

I haven't opened it up yet but intend to. She's packed with dirt as it went it nose first into a freshly cut corn field. Dirt was real soft. I had to excavate the engine out of the dirt. Only saving grace was I killed the engine just before impact. As for the raven, glad to have the room it took up. Just wish I still had the $180

Regarding the 70Surpass, I tend to pick higher pitched props for my 4 strokes so that at part throttle I still keep the air speed up. gives me great fuel economy and the top speed is there if I need it.

well don't feel bad Steve, I crashed my world models nemesis on the maiden flight. It was all my fault. I gassed her up. Checked my radio and all my settings, lit her up, turned her in the wind, and firewalled the throttle. Had to give it one right click on the a Ailerons and two down clicks on the elevator. Throttled back to 2/3 throttle, did some figure eights and some aileron rolls and was having a good time. She looked good in the air and the 52 Evo was way plenty with a zinger 11x7 prop. Slowed down and made a approach to the field to see how it handled going slower and the pass I was making was a little to fast to land so I banked left about 3 ft off the ground and went to hit the throttle when I gust of wind hit it and it rolled over and went in the ground. The left wingtip and nose hit about the same time and ripped the wing off, broke the fuse almost in half, destroyed the cowl and fill the engine with dirt. Really pi--ed me off. I knew better then to go that slow with a swept wing plane and the wind gust couldn't have happened at a worse time. I carried it back to my flight box and took out all the goodies and chunked it in the trash......there was a guy on eBay selling seagull nemesis cheap so I bought another. Putting all the same stuff out of the other crashed one only this time I will never fly it slow except to get it back on the ground.

Live and learn. What I learned, if I don't know anything about a plane like that, read the reviews. There were a lot of bad, and only one good on the raven. Oh well. I'm over it. Heck, I was kind of relieved when it went in. After all that, I was tired if $&@?!&/ with it.

One of my favorite planes to fly is my world models L A Racer. I have put it thru hell and it's still a great flying plane. I have a 52 magnum in it with a tuned muffler swinging a zinger 11x 7 prop. I have brought it in wide open from 100 feet to 3 ft off the ground many times and it's still together. Last time out with it, the right half of the elevator disintegrated after making some high speed passes. Actually was able to land it. Was going to rebuild the elevator until I looked online and bought a replacement for 12 bucks. It just screws in so making the change was easy. She is ready to go tear up the sky again. Gonna take her out next time I go flying. You can go vertical on takeoff with it and fly it out of sight. The more I run the magnum, the better it seems to run.

I'm also an LA Racer fan! Terrific airplane and I think one of the better ARFs out there. I fly mine on an Irvine 39, which will take it straight up, and also throttles and starts beautifully. Great little engine and a wonderful combination with that plane. Haven't managed to destroy the elevator yet though...maybe I need more power!
