Here's 110 pages of what you are in for. These engines are junk & it's a real shame as they have so much potential. No quality control whatsoever.

So you have one of these engines? Or are you going to tellme all about them from the few posts you have read here?
Your posts have novalue.
If you don’t know whereto find the above mentioned parts, then move along.

You may find that your cam gears/lobe shat themselves due to little or no lubrication up front in the nose-cone area.

Did you check this before starting the engine?

It's a known Quality Control issue with this engine.

I stripped 3 teeth off my cam when it all seized due to the lack of post-manufacture lubrication.

I got my replacements from a place in England (I'm in Australia).

I can try to find a link to them if you'd like - but nothings exactly cheap. I can't remember 100% for sure, but I think they are actually "OS Magnum" parts.

Since you'll have to rebuild the front-end anyways now, check all the bearings up the nose area of the motor too - my bet is that they are as dry as a Witches ***.

BJ

PS - here you go:

Hi Tony...

400723 double gear - £31.50

400731 gear £18.00

...

Best regards,

Andrew

Hope this helps.

110 pages a few posts? Denial is not a river in Egypt my freind.

I was eager to buy one of these until I found out what a crap shoot they are.

AND, as far as Hobby king goes? I would never send them my money. They have known customer service issues as well.

Well trying to get anything out of anyone in China right now near, during or right after the "Chinese New Year Holiday" is going to be a problem. The country is pretty much shut down for the holiday. Nothing much if any, is going to happen there at this time.

Looks like there could be some improvement for oiling butthe inner side of front case, and cam assembly did have a coating of oil onthem. Just a burr on intake cam the bound up against the follower, took out thecam teeth.

It happens. New mfg'd parts sometimes have issues. I sometimes changed out $10000 transmission valve bodies, made in Germany, and they were DOA. It happens...

Ordered gear set from just engines in the UK. About $100 us shipped. Hobby king has got back to me and wants to work with me over repairs. Actually surprised at the fit and finish overall on this motor.

Hi Guys,
I purchased one of these engines from a reseller here in Melbourne Australia a couple of years ago. One of the first things I noticed with mine was that some of the bolts weren't torqued up properly. So to make sure everything was right, I stripped down the engine to its bare bones and rebuilt it with new, much better quality bearings. The result? A brilliantly reliable engine that hasn't missed a beat. I use a good quality fuel containing synthetic oils. Honestly, I really can't complain about the ASP400 and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to another hobbyist. In my opinion, it's awesome value for money. Where else can you get a 5 cylinder radial for under $1000? What do Hobbyking charge? $700 odd? For that sort of money, don't expect after sales support but for that sort of money, you're getting a pretty impressive little radial.

Best wrap I've read on this engine so far

Mine shat the cam gears due to what I think was down to absolutely no pre-lube whatsover up the front end - but the engine itself ain't too bad for the bucks

BJ64, what stopped the pre-lube from happening? There are massive passages for oil to get to the cam gears from the crank case.
Do you operate turbines too?

Yes, I have a pair of Turbines. Haven't fired them up in ages, though. Slack, I know

My ASP 400 seems to have shipped without any lube up in the nose - I ended up stripping 3 teeth of one of the cam gears on its 3rd or 4th run on small tanks of fuel (less than about a litre of juice all up). When I rebuilt it, I noticed that the bearings up the front were dry-as. Not even a hint of grease/oil. The cam gears didn't even leave a trace of oil on my finger. The cam followers were coated with dry black powder from running without oil and even the pushrods were as dry as a witches ***.

Turns out that a few others noticed this on their engines too - some lucky enough to have pulled the nose off for inspection before their first run. Others found metallic swarf under the rear cover in the induction area.

So it appears there may have been some production runs where the 'quality assurance' and attention to detail were less than average.

There's a few spiels on it over in the ASP Rebuild thread: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/glow...rhaul-114.html

Warmed up enough outside to run in the engine today, ran about 12oz fuel through it , pulled it off the stand, checked valves, pickled it in 2stroke oil, and now awaits the perfect airframe.

Also note Hobby King did respond to all of my emails, just took an extra day or so longer than what I wanted.

Not wanting to seem like a smart adz here, but wouldn't it be great if they would knock a few $$$$ off of the price & sell this engine as a kit?

I would probably go for that & it might prevent someone that didn't have the resources & knowledge to do the things that many have had to do to get a reliable engine from having an expensive & negative experience.
