Saito 1.25 Where is the rock & roll ?
Fired up my new Saito 1.25 yesterday, which is mounted in a Hangar 9 Christen Eagle II . All that I have ever heard or read is how these 1.25's are real earth shakers and vibrators. Well, what I found yesterday is one of the smoothest running and idling Saito's that I own or even others that I have observed running at our flying field. Even at low idle, no vibrations or pounding.
I own two other Saito .91's and an OS .90 four stroke and I must say that this new Saito 1.25 seems like it is going to be the smoothest running engine of them all.
Fail to see what everybody is talking about when they state that the 1.25's are real shakers.

I have one and have had 4 other Saito engines of different sizes. My experience is much like yours. The 1.25 (when tuned properly) is fairly smooth. I have found also the prop makes a big difference. A heavier APC prop makes it idle much smoother compared to a light weight wood prop. The flywheel effect seams to really help.

I am running a Master Airscrew 15 x 7 (3) blade prop along with a custom cut Tru-turn spinner. I ran it yesterday on 15% fuel as that is what I had left over. But I also do have and yet to open a new gallon of 30%. Can not wait to sell how it performs on the 30% fuel.
To tell the truth after what I had read about these engines being real shakers, I was a little nervous and hesitant about mounting it in the Eagle. But after what I observed yesterday, I am greatly pleased with this engine.

The only time Saitos are shakers is when the LS needle is set too rich, for some guys are afraid to run the LS needle in to its optimum setting. The 1.25 is a 9,000 rpm engine no matter how you slice it, so you might as put the most prop on it that will let it rev at 9,000. There could be an exception to what I said if the newer 1.25s with the wider included valve angle make more power, I don't know whether this is the case or not. Maybe w8ye knows.

i wouldnt run that prop much over 9,500 rpm ok it will really unload in the air and might throw a blade. on the 30% I would run an APC 15x8-9 to a APC 16x7-8 size props for most draggy sport planes. 14x10-15x10 for a bit faster planes like revolvers and 13x13N for speed planes.
I sincerely doubt that I would be flying this model at peak RPM's. I am not the type of pilot that needs to demonstrate his needs or abilities to tear around the skies. LOL

Mine was a shaker during part of the initial 40 minute break in. It came up pretty quickly after the engine was leaned fairly well. It ran a little on the rich side. It worked it's way past the shaking and is a pretty smooth engine. I was running a 15" APC with numbers in the low 9000 range. Mine is an early A version. W8YE keeps telling me the engine will like a 16" prop after about 3 gallons and is fully broken in. I thought I had that much fuel burned, but I had major problems with that model and engine issues took a back seat.
