Default Help with Morris Hobbies (Rossi) engine.

I have been out of the hobby for 7-8 years. I have a Rossi 45 in a Balsa Nova that I have a problem with. The problem is the crank shaft is too short to tale an 11 x 6 prop with the thrust washer in it. You only have 3-4 threads of the crankshaft engaged on the crank. I found a prop hub I could get a firm grip with without the thrust washer o n it and have flown this 4-6 times. I got it this way from Morris Hobbies and never did get it taken care of.

Now that I am getting back into the hobby, is there anyone you have had good dealings with that I can call and explain my problem and then send the engine in for a fix.

I know Morris is out of business and not an option. This is too back as I like the Balsa Nova and enjoy flying it.

Thanks

Frank

You could try a thinner front washer. I like to see 6 threads engaged. Some of the combat motors use a short shaft, mostly to save weight and stop it from bending, as well as less machining. They use a stepped nut. A counterbore must be made in the propeller or a larger hole, which is a PITA. A bit of material can be taken off of the front of the prop hub too, or use a different brand of prop.

11x6 is a bit much of a prop for that engine. You may want to try an 11x4 as it would be more load appropriate and have a thinner hub.

aspeed, I think you have the answer there. Thanks.

Does anyone know of a repair depot in the US where I could send this to get the crankshaft changed.

Rossi quit making model engines. All we have left is whatever is still around. Parts may still be found, but it can be tricky though.

You might try http://www.rossienginesusa.us/ and contact them to see if they have a crankshaft that might work.

Rossi evolved into AXE Rossi which specializes in model car engines now.

Did you let them know you were planning to over prop the engine?

Planethobby could not help. Novarossi and Rossi are different parts. Very nice and quick response from him. He referred me to axirossi, which I have tried.

Speed, I'll put on the 11x4. Thanks

Sounds good Frank, that engine likes to be run in the 16,000 to 17,000 range. I used that engine for several seasons of pylon racing and found the best prop for that was a 9x7.5. The 11x4 will most approximate the same load. Best of luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. For now, I'm trying the 11x4 to see how that goes.

If there are problems, I'll PM you later.
