I peak my high speed needle and then back it off 200-300 RPM before fiddling with the low speed needle. That is where the engine will fly and that will be the max fuel flow seen by the engine and low speed needle in flight. I do not suppose 200-300 RPM fuel flow will make much difference. I tweak idle by acceleration testing -rich if it stumbles on acceleration or lean if it dies on snap acceleration. You want to be able to snap accelerate without hesitation for many reasons.

I once watched a fellow with a brand new Saito, I think it was an ,82. He had taken it out of the box and fiddling around with before installing, turned the idle (low speed needle) all the way in. He could only get it to run at WOT. He was mad because it was brand new engine and did not work. I said, "Take your screw driver and crank the screw in the throttle arm flush with the ide arm." He did, and it ran like a charm albeit, very rich. He said, 'He thought it should be all the way in, that it was loose and would fall out." So he tightened it up.

Some would say the low speed needle should be flush with the throttle arm off. It makes little difference for a new engine. So it is much easier to reference it to the flush with the throttle arm. Works for me.

I peak the HS needle and leave it peaked while I set the LS because the needle seat for HS needle is fixed. If we try to set the LS needle with the HS needle rich, you'll be compensating for the HS richness and could easily end up over compensating and render the HS needle ineffective. That's my take anyway.
I am going to be doing that very thing in about a half hour breaking in an older series but new .90ts.

The flush or 1/16" recessed setting comes from Saito for the low speed needle.

I bet that guy was hopping mad when his engine would only run wide open.

Another way to look at what Dave is saying is the 300 rpm richening of the high speed is an artificial setting. It's just a judgement thing that we hope is right. Doing it Dave's way is working with dead on perfect settings when you tune the low speed, and that's the most important needle.

Barry, I got to break in two new engines today, the above mentioned Saito .90ts and a new OS .56 fourstroke, a gift from my daughter. I don't have a key on my keyboard to make that weird symbol so I'll just show you a picture.

Here is the alpha character: α

as in OS engine FS α 56

To get symbols, go to this page http://unicode-table.com/en/
and cut & paste into your posts

Dave, remember what Konrad used to say about them OS engines!!!!

We need the same symbol for one of the Evolution 2 stroke engines too.

One of the many things Konrad seemed to have missed out on is the outrageous prices of OS repair parts.

I don't know about loving the nickel substitute for chrome, Dave.
