Default Very Hot Engine

So I have this Saito 4-stroke and it doesnt seem to have any trouble starting up, but it gets REALLY hot really fast...it will run well as long as I keep throttle higher than idle...but if I bring it back it will stall every time and even at higher RPM it will stall within 30 seconds and when it does, there will be smoke coming out the exhaust. The fuel is standard 15% so im not sure what would be causing this. Any ideas?

My first thought is almost always too lean when reading posts like this. Does the engine exhibit the same behavior when set one turn richer on both the low and high speed needles?

Richen the low speed needle. Try one full turn richer and lean into a good low speed setting from there.

Based on my experience with many Saitos the low speed needle appears to be at the original factory setting, (very rich). I'll blame it on the high speed needle or the prop size as Pope stated. What size Saito is it, please.

All could be right, though.

Its a FA-91 and its an OS type F. I not too privvy on how these engines work. I think the low speed needle is at the base of the throttle so I cant get to that without removing the engine from the plane....but there is also a little spring screw on top of the carb, but not 100% sure what thats called. I was gonna try to start it up again today but my glow stick wasnt charged, so I will try again tomorrow.

The spring screw is the idle speed screw, it would not effect the running temperature.

yes, that small screw head on the end of the throttle arm (in your photo) is the Idle Needle, most people drill a hole on the side of the cowl (or plane) so they can adjust it, this is because you may need to adjust it as the weather changes

Okay I got it to idle pretty good but as soon as I pull of the glow stick, it stalls, and if I give it gas it will start to stall unless I open throttle a bit more then it will go and start to stall again... and repeat.

Change the glow plug for a new one and see if the behavior still exists. If it does, typically a rich idle mixture will cause the engine to quit when the glow driver is removed. A bad glow plug can exhibit the same behavior.

Okay, I’ll give that a try. I’m guessing this engine may run a little easier when it’s not 25 degrees out Thanks for all the advice.

You have to fine tune the idle without glow power.
