Irvine 53 Prop Sizes
I have a Irvine 53 without a munual, great engine, but I need to know the prop size range; I now run a 12X4, and it works great but I want to run the engine on another plane without tearing the engine up because of the wrong size prop.

I have a 53 on a very fast airplane and it took me a number of tries to get the best prop for good performance. I tried 11 – 7 cut down 11 -7, etc. and I ended up with a 10 – 7 that gives great high speed performance and unlimited vertical. Here is a video http://media.putfile.com/Kaos-40-Kit

Now I'm confused; someone said the smallest prop for the 53 is a 12X6; I run a 12X4 and its pulls like crazy; now guys tell me they run any thing from 11X7, 10X7 to 10X6; does anyone have a manual? what does Irvine actual recommend?

Doug - The Irvine 53 manual says the prop range should be from 10 X 9 to 12 X 8.

The data sheet shows 10 x 9, 11 x 8, 11 x 9, 12 x 6, 12 x 7 and 12 x 8. It depends on what type of aircraft but none of their recommended props worked for me. The big props loaded my engines down too much and I tried two different engines. I was looking for speed and unlimited vertical.

You will find this type of feedback on proping your irvine 53.. What you need to know is that the manual calls for those type of props in the UK because of noise pollution laws,,the props like 11-9 11-10 etc give off less noise..This is true info... so what i have done is prop for the kind of flying im doing and the type plane AND WEIGHT.. Pattern style plane, i use the 11/5 for 3d type flying the 12/4 is good,, hope this helps...

From the prop recommendations in the manual, this engine; at least as it comes from the manufacturer, with the normal muffler, may be much better off loaded down with a relatively large prop...
But, since Irvine engines are now made by OS (ABL, Etc.) and OS are known for their 'quiet' prop recommendations (like a 12x7 for the OS.46AX), one can never know for sure...
The best you can do is to 'plot' this engine's actual HP curve, by taching various props sizes and using [link=http://mvvs.nl/prop-power-calculator.xls]the PĂ© Reivers PropPower calculator[/link], drawing the curve...
Best performance will be put out by propping the engine to about 1,000 RPM below peak-power, in ground static conditions...
As the propeller 'unloads' in flight, the engine will be around peak-power most of the time.
Using the advertised HP number from the manufacturer will prove to be totally stupid, since they are just lies in disguise... not information.
Plotting the HP curve will show this to you. Tell us what you got!

prop recomendations are just that... recomendations.
You will always get the best results by testing various props in the airframe you intend to use it in. You wont hurt the engine going over or under the "recommended range"... within reason.
I have run mine (old pre OS stock) on an APC 2.25x3.75 fun fly prop in a fun fly plane for years now. Runs GREAT! Easily hovers the 5.25 lb plane and pull it out with authority on 10% WIldcat fuel.
For a "regular" model, I would start with an 11x8 or 12x6 and work from there.

I had a plane and ran a 11 X 7 .. It seemed to do very well ..... ( They plane was very heavy custom built Bi Plane.) I bought it because it was cheap with great Servos and a Never Run Irvine .53 ...
Well the plane had structual failure in flight (to much of a G load on the wing)
So to get back to my case The prop I had was doing fine. The plane was fast , but the motor sounded like it was topped out ( No I didnt tach it).
I now have the Irvine .53 on a Seagull 540-.46
My question is what prop should I use ,,,,, Does anyone have a suggestion
My understanding is to hang it on the prop I could use a big prop but low pitch to keep the rpm in the upper range,
Or do I go with a smaller dia prop and a bigger pitch ?
OH I HAVE A HEADACHE NOW >........
