Gasket materials
Cleaning up 2 Magnum pro 45s after 28 years in a box. I need to replace the back plate and front gaskets on reassembly. No parts are available. Do I need to cut new ones from gasket material or will Loctite flange sealer work?

Sealer will work, but some brands leave a stain. You can cut your own with a sharp Xacto knife. I cut the big circle and sandwich it between the parts to cut the rest use a sharpened tube for the bolt holes. I like the 6 mil poly vapour barrier. File foder cardboard works too, but why bother? It is only going to last as long as the original. The aluminun duct tape is ok for some things too, but not really for that.

I either cut my own gaskets or don’t use one and use sensor safe RTV instead. The better made engines use an o-ring on the backplate, but typically only companies catering the RC cars and trucks machine backplates with o-rings.
For those cutting their own gaskets, 65-80lb card stock or photo paper works well. If you don’t have an old gasket to trace, put the backplate itself or the back of the engine on your AIO printer/scanner and make a photo copy on the appropriate paper. Cut it out with a scissors and Xacto knife and you’re in business. I have done this very thing to countless engines.
