Plane for Saito 72
Instead of shopping for an engine for a particular plane, I am trying the opposite. I have always wanted a four stroke engine but have only used 2 strokes in the .32 to .61 size. I think I would like to try the Saito 72 because it seems (from my reading) to be a pretty reliable and user-friendly intermediate sized engine. I had planned to try it on a Sig Rascal 40 (which I already have) but the prevailing opinion on RCU was that it was too much engine for this model. Looking for intermediate to advanced flying - sport/aerobatic category, maybe a bipe (kit or ARF). Not big on warbirds or pattern and I'm not currently interested in a profile fuse. So what's a good match for the 72? Seems like more models are calling for 50 size or 90+.
Maybe this doesn't belong in the engines forum, but I didn't know where else. Mods - please move if necessary.
Thanks
Ross

RE: Plane for Saito 72
perfect match for a u can do 36 .46.
everything you have heard about the saito 72 is true. it is a great engine! probably my most user friendly engine, and that is even comparing it to my irvine .53.

Funtana and Sig SE look good. I don't want a 4* - too many of them around here. I have done a fair amount of reading on the UCD 60 but not much on the 40 size - how is it? Don't think the Pizazz is still available?
thanks

UCANDO 46, FUNTANA, SOMETHING EXTRA, and If I had the saito 72 I would put it on either the something extra or go to www.vectorflight.com and check out the 58 inch wingspan extra 300 arf.. I have one and quality is A++ and easy build, and cheap price.

The Vector Flight Extra 300 looks really good and seems likely to fly well with the 72.

Moderator - Although I think there is some interesting information in this thread, it has turned out to be more of an ARF thread rather than an engine discussion. Maybe it should be closed or moved to ARF or Clubhouse rather than cluttering up Glow engines. I am interested in the engine and was not aware what good airframes were available in the size range. Thanks to all responders!

RE: Plane for Saito 72
I have 72 in an Avistar. Built wires on the rear and struts on the front. Had it out last night. Unlimited vertical. APC 12x6 10,700 as I recall. Did this a couple years ago. First flight pulled the firewall loose. It's a Select model. You will have to pin and try stock the fire wall. I also made it a tail dragger. Takes off in about 5 or 6 feet. Tail never has a chance to come up. Set the throws on the horns to the max and go.

The Saito .72 is the perfect engine to slightly over power a .46 size plane. Look for any sport/acro/3D plane that is .46 size. Many of these will also list a .70 size 4-stroke as the alternate plwer plant. The .72, by the way, is about 1 ounce heavier than a nominal .46.
The Saito is an excellent running, long lasting engine. You will need to break it in just like they say, 400-500 rpm, slobbering rich on a castor blend fuel and throttled back for a couple of tanks, then rich for several more. They need a minimum of a half gallon really rich, then rich for another gallon. If you do this, the ring will seat and feel like an ABC engine. rush it and it won't hold compression very well. It may also not idle very well for the first couple of gallons. Saitos are made from good stuff and take a while to get really running. They do last a long time.
After 3 gallons, I would switch to an all synthetic fuel with 20%-30% nitro. You will notice a difference. 13-6 prop.

Your response puts things into an interesting perspective. Perhaps I have been expecting a little too much for this engine size - most of my experience is with two-strokes. I was thinking of the Saito 72 as a substitute for a strong 60 rather than a 46. Horsepower numbers mean very little as a comparison between 2S and 4S engines because of the RPM where HP is evaluated vs. the RPM where the engines are typically operated - the 72 is actually rated for less power than a "good" two stroke 46. I have very little experience (so far) in this area and happily rely upon the (somewhat varied) opinions I get here at RCU.
Thanks

I firmly agree with the Funtana, SE, UCD-40 etc. but one that flies great and is easy on the pocket-book is the Magic Extra (Modeltech) you might give it a look as well-
I have a Zen-50 with a YS-63 that I LOVE, I know you don't like pattern but if you flew mine I bet you would!
Keep us posted,
james

I also have this engine. I traded for it a few days back. I bought a GP Piper Cub fabric covered 40 size to put it on. I would think it would be more than enough. From what I have been told.

RE: Plane for Saito 72
The Great Planes Extra 300S .40 ARF is a great combo with a .72. It's not a 3D plane but if you want an easy flier that will do most any aerobatics this is the plane.
If 3D is your thing then the .40 profiles are awasome with a .72. The OMP Edge kit gets my vote if you like to build and the Extreme Flight ARF is the one to get if you don't like the smell of glue and sawdust.
