Default OS 1.60

I am thinking about buying an OS 1.60 for my Yak 54. Is this a good engine? I keep hearing it's finicky and hard to adjust. I don't need the grief.

The OS 1.60 is a great engine. It is not hard to adjust to my knowledge. I run an 18x6W apc on mine and get 9000 rpm rich for flight. This is on 10% coolpower. Alot of people that have problems with this engine are running pitts mufflers without a pump or regulator. The backpressure of a pitts is too low to make this engine run good. A good pump or regulator fixes this. I use the cline pressure system on mine and it is a no frills, no adjustment system that you just hook up and go. Using the A5 plug from OS also clean up the midrange considerably. This engine is also better on fuel than more of the other similar offerings including the fourstrokes. Also, once primed with fuel starting is accomplished with just one or two backflips of the spinner cone. And mine has never deadsticked on me and idles so low I can almost count the revolutions of the prop. It also has less vibration than the compareable fourstoke powerplants too. Sounds pretty user friendly to me. So, do not think twice about buying this engine. You would have to pry mine from my cold dead fingers!

Best two stroker I ever owned! Smooth, powerful and very user friendly.

It is the only 2-stroke glow out of a dozen engines I own. IMHO you need some kind of additional fuel supply such as a Perry pump or a Cline reg. and an A5 plug. As others have mentioned it is very powerful, fuel efficient and user friendly. I blow people away when they are fighting to get their engines started and I grab my spinner, give it a quick flip backwards and away we go, if the prime is right it happens the first time, every time. I have mine proped down to 7800 in an effort to keep the noise level down and it will run all day at this rpm.

I dislike 2-stroke engines with a passion, but this baby will be with me a long while.

I have 2 OS 1.60's. One in a Pitts, the other in a Ercoupe. Both have
the Pitts style muffler. I would have to say that in my 35+ years associated
with R/C engines, that the 1.60's I have are the best running 2 stroke engines
I've ever owned.

I know that some people are running into difficulty with the Pitts muffler. I found
that by blocking off one pipe , using the large fuel tubing all the way to a
reworked klunk and being sure that the tank position is correct seems to work
out fine for me without any problems. No pumps or regulators required from my
point of view.

Regards
Roby

Blocking off one of the pipes usually results in the loss of rpm on the motor. That is why most people use the pump or regulator setup. Fixes the problem without the loss of rpm. The perry VP30 is like 25 to 30 dollars so not too expensive either.

I have a Perry V30 pump on mine. It's been there since day 1, never touched it and the engine runs consistent from full to empty and I was able to put my tank on the CG. I had an OS 1.08 I put 1100 flights on with the same kind of pump, never touched that one either, I forget their even there.

I can't imagine why you would want to, the carb on the 160 is absolutely flawless with the pump.

I have a Cline regulator. Will this work with my OS 1.60?

Skip, I run the OS 1.6 in a 1/4 scale CAP 232 for about 1 year now, no pump, no regulator, just go with the bigger ( .125 ID fuel line), and watch for restrictions in the plumbing, ie: clunk, filler valve etc. Mine runs fine at 9000 RPM w/the 18x6 Zinger Pro.
in my concern, the best running 1.6 size ever made, you cant go wrong with it.

The cline will work excellent. You will have to tap the backplate. The easiest way is to buy the pressure nipple that goes with the OS 1.60 FI available at Tower Hobbies. Looking at the back of the engine you will have to remove the upper lefthand screw that holds on the backplate. Using a drill bit that is smaller than the threads in the hole, finish drilling out the boss till it penetrates into the crankcase. Throughly clean out all aluminum shavings inside the crankcase of the engine. Now all you have to do is to screw the new pressure fitting into place.

I have been very happy with my 160FX for the last 2 years in 2 differents pattern planes. I have a friend who use one in a 1/4 Cap 232 and he is also very happy. The fuel consumption is good if you keep the RPM in the 8000-8500 with a good load from the prop (17x13 on my planes). And this is with 10 or 15% nitro. I use the pipe pressure and a upper tank behind the firewall. The main tank is on the CG. It usually start by hand, except maybe the first start of the day.

However, I had a surprise last week when the engine stopped and felt stiff right when I started it. On inspection, I found the crankshaft was cracked from the inlet port, halfway on the circomference. The crank is back order until June 30th so I am thinking of buying another 160FX so I could continu practicing. Does anybody has a spare crank ?
