K&B sportster 28

RE: K&B sportster 28
This picture reminds me of a question. I bought one that has a remote needle. Can I install the needle valve assembly right on the carb instead?
Thanks,
Jim

You can if you have a lathe and milling machine.
I'm going to replace this carb with a Perry #2100 carburetor.
Then run a pressurized fuel system going into a Iorn Bay regulator.
Oh, going with a J-tech Pitts muffler also.

Some people have some nerve. Maybe some rich lady will see it and think it ought to make a good gift for her man.
You never know if a sucker will come along.
I remember there used to be some guy selling old worn out FOX engines at exhorbitant prices too. He once had some old used Testors engines at eye popping prices as well.

I could swear that I posted in this thread before, but I can't find it. Oh well.
My wife's old timer Red Zephyr is powered by a K&B Sportster .28. It has burned many gallons of fuel and is still in the prime of its life. It only likes one prop so far and that is a Master Airscrew 9x4 black epoxy/glass prop. I've burned many different fuels in this engine and it is clear that it has a preference for fuels with castor oil, but it runs on just about anything that you throw at it.
They did things bassackwards with the Sportster series engines. Instead of chrome plating the cylinder walls, they chromed the pistons. It leads to a rather strange feel before break-in, but it comes around eventually.

They had to chrome the piston because of the high grade silicon aluminum that they used for the cylinder block. Pretty much the same stuff that Mercedes Bentz uses in their blocks. Contrary to most opinions the Sportster is not a slag engine. It came out at about the time discount fuels were introduced and as it wasn't designed for the stuff it got an unfair reputation pretty fast. As you have read, using the correct fuel will give you a very long lived engine. The origionals didn't have a main shaft bushing as they felt that the quality of the block was good enough to run that way. Must be so as I have a 28 over 20 years and it is still running. They probably put a bushing in later ones to calm the potential buyers nerves.

Yes, fuel did change a while back and not for the better, as far as I'm concerned. But, we have to use what is provided, like it or mix our own.
My .28 does not utilize a bushing either. I have yet to check my .65 that I bought used. I have yet to obtain a .45 and a .20, to complete the set.

You will lose close to 1k rpm if you switch from the stock K&B muffler, installed in a stock manner, to any other "muffler". Lots of folks are not aware of the fact that in addition to be quieter than K&B's offerings, their mufflers also provided a substantial boost in horsepower.

Yeah, ill fated was true. I had built the plane kit, which isn't easy if you built any Royal kits, but it wasn't covered yet. It was mostly done though, ready for all the finishing touches, etc. But we moved and during the move it got crushed by some boxes that fell on it in the moving van. But it was my third build of a Royal B17. I had built two before it. One got shot down at a scale flyin by someone stupid enough to ignore the frequency control. The other one I sold after flying it for a while.
Which Japanese Flying boat are you referring too?

The Kawanishi H8K2 "Emily"
I did a post on it back in 2003. Need to ad it to the "to do" list!

A small one with four .20 swinging 8x6 props would be cool. If the .20's can swing Graupner 8x6 three blades at a good speed that is. I'm going to try this prop on the .28

Here is a 30 pound 124" 1/12 scale one powered by OS FS-.52's 4-strokes.
Man look how those little engines rip this huge plane off the water!
