RE: OS FS-70 or Saito FA-65
I prefer Saito's but the 65 is heavier and less powerful than the Saito-72, I had a couple, ran great but power for weight (If its an option?), get the 72!

every where i've seen the saito .72 is more expensive then the 209.99 for the os .70. I say get the .70 OS. I have one in my funtana, and yesterday after giving it a final tweak after finishing breaking in the engine with the first gallon the thing is a rocket! Hover at just below 3/4 throttle. Also have never dead sticked on me. It is swinging a 14x4W APC prop at 9990RPM, and its still a little rich. plenty of full throttle smoke. you will not be dissapointed in anyway with this engine!

RE: OS FS-70 or Saito FA-65
The Saito .65 is supposed to be a really smooth runner, and I think if you have a plane that can use the extra weight up front, should be a fine engine. It is one of the few Saitos that have an ABC construction (most are AAC) if that makes a difference to you. The OS are very heavy engines. The 70 surpass is about 4 ounces more than the Saito .72. Both are fine engines, and easy to use. Much depends on what airframe you intend to install it. For a Goldberg Anniversary Cub (same size as Great Planes 40 Cub), the Saito .65 was advertised as having perfect power for float plane. If light weight is important, go with the Saito .72.

i bet a good prop for the super sportster would be a 13x6. you want to try and keep your RPM's around 10000 on the ground with this engine. otherwise when it unloads in the air it may develope valve float, which is not good. If you want a rocket, you may even try a 13x7 or 13x8. Pretty much any prop that keeps full throttle to around 10000 RPM is a good prop.

Tigil:
Go with a 12x10 if you can't use a 13" prop.
Back on the Saito 65 vs OS 70.
The FA-65 is one of the first Saito engine designs. While a good engine, it reflects its age. If you have one, enjoy it. It's a hell of a good engine. But don't go out of your way to get one. The FA-72 makes the FA-65 look like a dog, and it's both lighter and more powerful than the OS 70 FS.
But if you are buying new take the Saito FA-82. It blows the other three out of the water.
However, if you insist on the OS get the one that says "Magnum" on the side. You save money and get a true chrome plated cylinder.

In the search window at Horizon, type in Saito 82a, below is what mine does after a brief break in.
Saito .82a
Fuel Wildcat Premium 15%,
Prop APC 14x6, RPM 9,210 peaked and 9,000 richened down to what I believe is a healthy setting for the engine.
This after 48 oz of fuel.

Hi;Hobbsy;I just went to Horizons site and typed in Saito82a,Says it never heard of it?Tried different conbinations capitals etc but no recognition? No big deal I guess!Does sound like a good engine, have 2-65 and 1-72 as said the 65 is kind of heavy but if you have a plane that needs nose weight anyway not a big deal.

All the RC magazine tests on the Saito 72 remarked that it was less powerful than the OS 70 Surpass and its about 3 ounces heavier and more user friendly as well.

RE: OS FS-70 or Saito FA-65
Dear Shemp:
The Saito FA-65 is indeed heavier than the OS FS-70 Surpass II. The Saito FA-65 is also an engine that is 20 years older than the recently released Surpass II. It has taken OS that long to match the antique Saito design.
The more modern Saito FA-72 is a full quarter pound lighter than the FS-70. and more powerful also.
Then if we check the latest from both, we still have the FS 70 Surpass II, but Saito has the FA-82 which is both lighter yet, and a lot more powerful. To get the power from an OS we have to go to the FS 90 Surpass, and that one is a full half pound heavier than the FA-82 Saito.
OS four stroke engines have come a long way from the days of their rear mounted cams, but Saito's engineers have been working too. OS is still playing catch up.
If you just insist that you must have an OS engine, go ahead. But unless you are buying multi cylinder engines there are better choices.

RE: OS FS-70 or Saito FA-65
Hello; Here's a simple solution; buy one of each. I have both engines, I think I have 3 Saito 65's and only one Surpass 70. Both are very good engines, I had the first Saito 65 in a GP CAP 21 until I got "mid-aired" I have had the Surpass in a GP Decathlon. Many gallons through both no problems at all that I can remember. I needed a heavier engine for the Decathlon, that 's why I bought it. I have used the Saito 65 as a replacement for a 40 to 46 2-stroke in many applications, from trainer to ultimate fun-fly. I sold my only black one awhile back, but it ran the same as my other two "natural" ones.

RE: OS FS-70 or Saito FA-65
Well, i have two OS 70 Surpass. Origianls, not the Surpass II. I have one in my Kyosho P-40 with a 12x8 on it, it flies awesome, and i have the other on my pizazz with a 14x4, it also flies great. both are awesome runnign enigne. ive never ran a saito, so im not sure about them, but i hear onyl good things about both, i love my OS's!
