1.60FX on Perry success story.
Nothing new here. The motor ran hot in the mid-range. Also, The high speed needle was unresponsive. I installed the Perry and adjusted the low end needle lean. It is a new motor. Very crisp anywhere at any time. No hesitation. Very predictable throttle. Idles at 1,900 rpm for a minute and no load up--have not tried longer? Motor does not lean out in mid-rage and get hot. Very happy--thanks for the info.

I have the OS 1.60 in PL Prod Flashdance using:
Perry oscillating pump
15% Cool Power
17x13 APC
Greave pipe
Have not tach it yet. runs great.
What prop is everyone using for 3D?

Yes, I'm reading this, and yet still, both of my 1.60's are still running just fine without a pump.
I must be doing something wrong, I'll guess that I will have to suffer along with it.

I have never tried to run the engine without a pump so I cannot comment on whether a pump is necessary. I use the pump because I have the tank way back on the CG. The engine has about 1 gallon thru it and never an engine out....(touch wood).

Roby-
Don't worry--you are not doing anything wrong.
My friend has one without a pump on a sig 231ex. Runs good. However, he does not do any 3D. When he flys the motor runs between 3/4 and full throttle the entire time(except landing), and when he goes to clear it out it on the ground before take-off it is not clean. Don't know if he has tried to lean out low end.
Also, I bought this plane from a guy who did a lot of 3D with 1.6 and no pump. However, this was a different new motor when I got the plane. The motors must have been different?

I have another plane I am getting going with a 1.4 S.T. I have herd this motor needs back pressure and to plug one outlet on pitts. I am thinking I might just add a pump.

To any of you guys who have installed the pump.... I'm having problems with the pressure line from the crankcase. It doesn't seem to be very secure on the pump. It just slides off. I've got a clean cut and have even tried a piece of fuel line over it to tighten it up. I have no confidence in running it this way. Has anyone tried any kind of glue or found another type of line? The stock line has very little grip to it.

I&C Tech,
I had the same problem. Don't use silicon fuel line, it expands and some of the pressure will be lost. Use a piece of tygon tube and if it won't stay on, use Zap A Dap a Goo or other silicone sealer to hold it on the pump. Just clean up the pump with some alcohol before you use the silicone and it should work just fine. I did this and I haven't had any problems

Thanks Dan. Does the tygon tubing bend pretty well. With my current mounting, I need a 90 degree bend in a fairly small radius. Also, I found that the standard fuel line grips the pump really well. So I thought of trying to use fuel line as "couplers" for the supplied tubing. This was already setup from Perry for the pressure tap side so it should be ok for the pump side as well I thought.

I have silicone fuel line installed. The stiff tubing appeared to take the bend (~.5R), but when I got out to the field a 3 days after and went to start the motor I found that the bend turned into a kink. I used a small spring fuel line clamp at the pump.

The low speed needle on this engine controls the low to midrange and will limit the high speed flow if it's in too far. If you hear a rattle at low to mid throttle it's to lean on the low end. Open that sucker up and then adjust the high speed then check the low again. If the low end is set right the engine will idle all day at 1800 rpm and throttle right up with very little if any lag.
I have run my engine with no muffler pressure and I can get the engine to run rich. Did I get a better carb/ high speed needle?
With a Cline regulator the high speed needle was almost closed no more than 3/4 turn out.

GP Spacewalker,
My installation looks a lot like yours. I'm going out of town for a few days. If I don't get a pic up today, I will have one for you by the weekend.

Here's the picture of my installation using Tygon tubing and Zap A Dap A Goo holding everything in place. My apologies for taking so long. Hope it helps.

Wow that is a tight bend! Where did you find the Tygon? Are you running a fuel filter between the tank and pump. Is this on an edge 540?
Thanks,
Steve

Steve,
No filter, 16oz. tank located on the spar, Sig Extra 300XS, 18x6 prop. Nice flying plane. The Tygon is from my local hobby shop that I use for my 30% Lanier Edge 540. I believe it's 1/8th ID
