THe title says it all!! I am thinking of a new affordable engine in the 90's 2 stroke or 120's 4 stroke. Was told ASP engines are really affordable. Any comments??

ASP and Magnum are the same except for the name on the side. The XLS series two strokes are nothing but the best. I have a ASP 120 four stroke and I like it very well.

I have ASP 46, 52 and 91. All are powerful and virtually first flick starters. Never use an electric starter. Have a Perry pump on the 91, with the tank (just about) on the CG in a Swallow. Absolutely consistent engine runs and immediate throttle.

Superb - and the parts are cheap.

Just bought an MVVS 91 and I prefer the ASP...

As you were already advised, ASP and Magnum (and SC and SY) are all mechanically identical.
They are all made by the Sanye company in China.

Magnum is the badge they sell in the USA. ASP, SY and SC are used in other countries.

If you want an ASP, just buy a Magnum locally, or order an ASP from another country.
You will be getting the same product.

The Chinese sourcing of these engines, hints that their importers are making much higher profit percentages and amounts, than is usual in the engine distribution business.

I think they should cost much, much less to buy.

Thanks!! I'll call'em today! I found a Magnum 120 4 stroke NIB on ebay for $239 "buy in now" shipped. I'll see of my local HS can top that.

Your NIB example is probably an older model and devoid of warranty.
Think before you buy it.

When Just Engines brought in ASP a couple of years ago they had a deal on the 1.2 4 strk I ordered one and Paul was out and waiting
for more , on some of the smaller 4 strks he had them under the SC label. Paul stated he had enough parts in inventory for the
ASP,Magnum, and SC to put one together which he did> Its super, starts on 1or 2 hand flips, great response and idle and pulls like an ox.so my combo 91 is great also Paul came thru to make it happen

I've only owned one ASP, a 2-stroke .61 ABC. I've had problems with mine, mostly in the mixture settings. I've talked to several local people who owned various-sized ASP 2 strokes, and the first thing they asked me is "how did you manage to get yours to run?".. But then again I've seen several people who loved their ASPs and never had problems.
My problems were with airleaks in and around the carb. Once i found those and sealed them off, the engine is a screamer. Much more powerful than I actually need for my AstroHog.
Would I buy another ASP? Honestly, NO.. Too much trouble with this one.

Just came back from China, bought 2 engines, ASP S46AII and Magnum XL FS91AR for cheap cheap cheap price, all together cost me ¥1200, which is around US$149.00 . Haven't got time to try it yet. I 'hope' they are good.

According to the shop owner, the quality of 'made in china' engines are quite inconsistent. depends on your luck, some are very good, some are very short life. Adjust the mixture needle is a tricky bizz on these engines. But then they are cheap, what the hell, just try my luck.

I have the ASP 46 and the 91, which I belive is the same as your Magnum.

Both my engines perform faultlessly, are very easy start, set-up and handle in general. The 46 has had a good deal of abuse on full synthetic fuel in a Cougar for close on a year and only needs adjusting if there is a significant change in the weather. I have been running the 91 on a Perry pump in an aerobatic model and it's absolutely consistent and reliable in the air - it's had two to three hours running.

You may have acquired a couple of inexpensive engines, but no way are they "cheap". I believe you will get comparable performance to the more expensive brands, equal life and the benefits of low cost parts and 'proper' chrome bores.

Come back in two years and tell us how they are running...

Goldscallop carries the ASP line in Canada, and has great prices. Terry Wong has supplied quite a few students in our club with various trainers all outfitted with ASP engines, two and four strokes. They all seem to be very happy with the products, but I cannot tell you one way or the other about power comparisons versus this engine or that.

HP ratings don't mean squat. On a 2 stroke, 2.3 HP and 2.5 HP can only be achieved using a tiny, high pitched prop spinning at ridiculously high 15.6K rpm and 14.8K rpm respectively. On the other hand, the Magum 1.20 4-stroke will reach max HP output at a much lower and more reasonable rpm using "normal" flying prop.
