The newest issue of Fly R/C has a review on the new Norvel. Just got it in the mail the other day. They describe it as "a compact and lightweight package that delivers good performance and reliability, the engine has a good carb design and is very easy to tune and operate." Performance figures are:
(APC props and 5% fuel)
11X3 12,100rpm
10X6 11,700rpm
9X7 13,300rpm

The engine isn't a real powerhouse but it gets good fuel economy. Only gripe was the muffler is rather small and loud. Hmmm...sounds like a certain US engine maker from Arkansas.

Thank you for the information. I am a little dissapointed, in that my well broken in OS 40LA turns a 10X6 at close to 10,400. I was looking for more like 13000 plus out of the Norvel.

I havent received my issue of Fly RC yet, but I know the guy who wrote the review...

My tach numbers did seem a bit low, especially compared to some others I know who have run the engine - but I did recheck my tach figures more than a few times. Remember many factors affect the actual rpm figures, so its not uncommon to get a pretty different one yourself. I should retach it now after it has many flights (more than what I had at the time of the review) and see what I am getting...

Remember also that all my figures were taken during the bench break in runs. I still have it mounted in the plane and am continuing to fly it. Is definitley pulls the 4*40 around real well.

It is a really nice engine, I tried to find a fault with it, but it ran really great throughout the testing. I am interested to see how it stands up long term, compared to a standard ABC/ABN type.

If I were looking to buy a .40 size engine I would give it a serious look - and I was not a Norvel fan before I tested this engine (not having ever owned or run one other than a few of the .061's)
