Default ST4500/good starter motor?

I have a ST 4500 that I can't get started with any of my high tork starters, wich didn't surprise me. I thought about the Megatron, but at $160.00[X(].....no thanks, I would hate to buy a starter motor at almost the same value as my 4500!
I need to know if the Sullivan Dynatron is enough starter to turn this pig over? I can start it by hand, but like most guys....I am attached to my fingers and would hate to lose one or four of them.
But if the Dynatron isn't enough motor, I don't want to spend 65.00 on a starter that I don't need. Thanks

i start all my engines by hand. well... exept the raduga, but that old timer is a special case. just wear a pice of cloth on your fingers and they will be just fine even if thats a mighty big engine. and try to flip the prop with your fingertips touching the TE of the prop. that way your fingers will slip from the prop when exiting the compression cycle.

I really don't have a problem starting by hand, the real issue is that this ST4500 is mounted inverted and doesn't start as easily as when it is upright.
So I figured that if I have a powerfull enough starter to turn it over continuosly, I will have better luck getting it started, otherwis I'll be there for a half an hour trying to start it by hand.

Hold the plane inverted in the stand, and prime it real good before you set
it down in the upright position. It should start with one or two back-flips
by hand when you get the prime right.

That's the only way I could ever get the big Tiger started.

That is what I have been doing, but fliping this big old P-47 over all the time is getting old....

should have gone with gas I guess, wouldn't be having this problem....

[] Yup ! [] But prime it inverted like Dave outlines, get it good wet and sloppy, and get yourself a Horsehide glove from Ace hardware. A lot cheaper than a Megatron .

Supertigers like to start wet Remove the plu and squirt a bit down in it and fire it up. Or give a good shot in the carb

Thanks guys...I guess I'll stick to the leather glove and priming, and you are right there Jim, much cheaper than the Megatron!
For those of you with 4500 and just out of curiosity.....would the Dynatron spin the 4500 over?

Thanks again

Thanks Jim.... I may purchase one, just to have in case I loose a finger or two trying to start it by hand, just kidding any more after getting whacked a few times by a .60, I don't mind using a starter if I have one near by, I am definitely not above using starter anyway. Thanks

Why not check with the people who make the MIller adapter for a standard starter. It in effect gears the regular starters down to a medium speed hi torque machine. They should be able to tell if it will work or not. Should find their ad in most model mags. Good luck, red

DO NOT flip that engine through with your hands, you will get hurt. Your Megatron will probably do the job on 24 volts. I use the kickback method on mine, It works really good if your prop is heavy enough and its not too cold. Just load the engine with a good prime flip it through a few times as hard as you can WITHOUT the glow heater, set throttle .20%, connect the glow heater and spin it backwards as fast as possible, just be sure your hand is out of the way as it comes on compression, its easy with the prop coming on compression at 6-12oclock. This always works on mine when the motor is cold and its a warm day. If its a cold day the oil is too stiff and I cant get enough momentum to make it pop. If the engine is hot then its usually safe to flip the prop through compression in the normal direction. Be carefull these big glow engines kick back very hard when they are cold.

My Dynatron with Miller adapater and 24 volts will start anything, including my Harley (just kidding on the Harley)
I have not tried your motor but it will start any gas motor I have put it to, and serveral big glows without even straining

Kweasel,
I know all about kick back with this motor...I was using a chicken stick one day when it kicked back and split my prop down the middle! a brand new prop destroyed on the first flip[:@] I use the kick back method on all my 4 strokes...I'll have to give it a try with the 4500. Thanks.

Should use a chicken stick not stronger than your prop.
But proper priming is the key,and a strong glow driver.
