Irvine .53 vs. O.S. .50SX
I'm curious which engine, the OS 50SX or Irvine .53, is generally agreed to be more powerful. They are about the same price and my application would prevent the use of any tuned pipes or even the tower muffler, due to their length. I would most likely use the stock muffler. Thanks!

Both are very good engines. OS50SX is a ringed engine, Irvine53 is ABC and very very tight. The Irvine53 needs correct break in method as Dar has described in the MVVS forum "tappered bore break in". Power and carburation is almost equal. Good luck.

I Have A OS 50sx And While It Is A Good Engine I Have A Irvine 46 That Gives The Same Performance On 11x7 Apc Prop So I Would Go With The Irvine 53 When You Consider That Here In Uk The Irvine 53 Is Almost Half The Price Of The Os 50sx & Wy8e Is Right I Read A Recent Report That Irvine Engines Are Now Produced By OS.

I've been flying R/C for 30 years or more, and used mainly OS engines. They have all been excellent apart from one, an OS40P, about 20 years ago. Now I have a problem. I bought an Irvine 46 which I used successfully for about 2 years, suddenly it started to cut after about 5 minutes in the air. I tried all sorts, no result. I removed it from the aircraft and ran it on the bench, still the same.It just slows down and stops. It isn't seized, and it starts again straight away. The fuel supply from the tank is OK.......I'm baffled.
Anyone got any ideas please?

Firstly, sunstitute the existing plug with a plug known to be good and re-test.
If the problem is not solved ...
A defective head gasket or head screws a little loose at high temperature (after running for a few minutes) can cause this.
Remove head (carefully so as not to move liner) and check. Clean mating faces and replace gasket if at all suspect. Tension heads screws ... but not too tight!
Also, if the carb spigot is loose in the boss, or if the "O" ring at the bottiom of the carb is cut or perished, air leaks can occur.
Also, is the cinch bar which holds the carb in place an air tight seal in its housing? Air leaks here can cause you to loose your sanity ...
As a final thought, if there is not much "pinch" when turned over at the time the engine stops, you may need a new piston and liner assembly.
