Default RE: Everything Radial Engines

Hi rcdude7

I can't find any reference to a Saito .65 single. The closest is the .62 which has a bore of 26.2mm x 19mm stroke, compared to the 3.25 radial's 24.8mm bore x 22mm stroke cylinder which also has dual glo plugs. It is unlikely that these two cylinders are interchangeable, even without the second plug which is obviously a lucky-to-fit-in afterthought. A BIG PLUS over the likes of OS, ASP and Seidel.

FACT:
The online PDF manual and the printed book that comes with ALL 3 and 5 cyl Saito Radials says ONLY the 325 has ABC cyl NOT AAC. The online specs ONLY refer to the .60 and 1.00 flat twins as having ABC cylinders.

The ONLY confusion is whether the CURRENT 325R5 Radial has ABC or AAC Cylinders. Not a massive problem, but a bit misleading when the advertised spec says AAC, which is certainly the latest and best technology used on miniature engines. Plenty of full size engines have the chrome directly plated onto the Aluminium bore, no separate sleeve. I vaguely remember Porsche had something to do with perfecting the process, many years ago.

Regards, radial1951

As you probably know, the 325 is built around the .65 single cylinders. The .65 single, until fairly rcently used a thick chrome plated brass liner, with a ringed piston. The most recent .65 uses a cylinder that is chrome lined directly in the cylinder, with the ringed piston like the rest of the saito engines.

Several of the saito engines used a chromed brass sleeve in the past, (.50, .65, .80) I think they are all AAC now.

The .65 has a smaller bore and a longer stroke than the .62

My .65 has a chromed plated brass cylinder wall

65 24.8 mm X 22 mm The Saito 325 is the same as this but has five cyl

62 26.2 mm X 18 mm

Thanks w8ye, the .65 was discontinued in 2007 and does indeed have the same bore and stroke as the 325 radial.

Hi rcdude7, I stand corrected. Apologies. I guess I didn't look hard enough! Live and learn, huh?

So, is the 325R5 still using the .65 type cylinder... or is it now AAC? (talk about pedantic, sorry!) I guess I should be happy to never need to pull my engine apart to find out.... THE END.

That is nice. I would guess it uses 3X .65 or .72 cylinders.

If I had my wish, a 3x .91 =2.70ci would be nice to see, or something else with a better power to weight ratio than the current line up.

I had the Seidel that I purchased from Hobby King out for a run last night...
I am on the second gallon of a 3 gallon break in. The mix was 7% Super Techniplate, in 99.9% Methanol. Could'nt help but notice that the smell was exactly as I remember the old Cox engines of my youth... Just sayin...

Well, like Omega is 17% and Hornet ran 7% so you may get the opportunity to cut it with methanol and make it go farther but yes, you will get to use it all, and maybe then some

Glad to hear that on fuel- thanksI`m putting a PA- 27% Gee Bee-Y together for my 7-70-I`ll have it done, except for engine stuff before 7 arrives-As you can probably sense,I can`t wait to get my hands on that engine :-)I`m using a 24 oz tank and hoping I can stay up for at least 10 minutes.I`ll find out during break in.

Actually... I took about 5 minutes of video last night and I will load it to YouTube tonight and post a link. I posted on from the 2nd run a few weeks ago... Just scroll back a page or two.
Fuel;
I used Omega 10% Nitro for the first gallon and cut it with 99.9% Methanol. Worked well, but I will mix my own from now on. I don't want to have the risk of the Nitromethane by-products from blow by corroding the guts of this sweet piece of kit.
For break in, I posted the data a few weeks ago, but it might be on the "who is selling Seidel engines" forum. I don't have the book with me (at work) and don't want to misquote the data. [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=9623979]Seidel Break In Data[/link] (post 179)

Fuel consumption at 3000 RPM (static) with a 24x10 wood prop is about 1oz. per minute, so you should be about perfect with a 24 oz. tank. I would reccomend using a good glow driver too... My Seidel drops one or two cylinders every now and then if the engine rpm gets too low (2000rpm or less) for any length of time without battery power applied. It might be different if you use an exhaust collector ring, as the latent heat from back pressure will increase the cyl. head temps.

Dude,,,,
Would you panic if you would have ordered a LAMeDEL 7-70 and HK never gets them and still has your money!...
Not to mention, WHO NOWS what kind of LINER they have in those CYLs.....May only LAST 1-season of flying before worn out??
NO ONE has flown them for a season yet/?? Only Bench run.... Which is to be said not enough airflow for these ENGINES (or any for that matter)
.... Unless DUCTED on the bench...still not sure that would even work???

I really don't believe that you guys paid upfront like you have and have NO ISSUES at ALL with them NOT having
Your engines for over 3-months, when it was only to be 30days????
I recieved a FULL REFUND on mine...
I could see a down payment, or credit card pending but FULL PAYMENT????
Total Lunacy.... IMO...

Don't get me wrong, they sound better than my 5-cyl saito....and I like them, It is just a BIG risk on YOUR part...

I keep a very close eye on the engine temps with it installed on the test stand. It consistantly runs at no warmer than 130 F and the max RPM I have run is 4500. This is at an ambient temp of about 10-15 celcius.
It sounds as though there is some anger about not getting a Siedel radial. It is all about supply and demand. UMS is manufacturing numerous other products and it appears that the Siedel line might be plagued with more production woes like the ones manufactured in Germany. Having said that, it appears that there are a number of newer Siedels on YouTube...

I would call it frustration....More than ANGER....
I don't think you went throught what I went though with HK....
You placed your order, and blam...YOu got the engine w/in a week....
I wouldn't have had any issues either..

You like your engine great....
My question was to the other 7 people waiting on the 7-70 and the other 3- waiting for the 9-90~....??

If HK didn't require FULL payment, then I wouldn't be having this conversation...

If I would have HAD to have a Seidel, I would have had one DIRECT from UMS India...
(that was even with a discount from the price on the website)...

I feel your pain... I had to wait over a month to get mine from HK and there was zero communication from them. That being said, the engine is really well made and I would not have any issues ordering one that was built in India. It even came in a nocely dovetailed packing crate.

FOur grand??
f-that....
Way to much money.....
At the very least, they should have had a exhuast collector built into it!!?????
It does however have a TUbinator in it, so fuel distribution should be wonderfull!..
Almost TOO smooth!

I will pick up a airfram suitable for a Moki gas radial and have at it...

The OS 7-cyl is Amazing machine but....too much money..

The inline 4-cyl was actually priced at 1700$ for some time until back up to 2400$..
That was good price....
