What is a good muffler for the OS .50 SX?
i am looking for a good muffler for the OS .50 SX and i see alot of people are recomending the Tower Hobbies muffler. I am not sure but this is the one I think they are talking about http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJB16&P=7 . All I am looking for is a good muffler or pipe that will give me better throttle control and maybe a few more rpm's. Any ideas would be great!

Either are awesome on the smaller motors like the 50, but a little pricey depending on what you call pricey.

Mike,
That is the muffler they're recommending. It's about the same sound output as the stock muffler with baffle removed but you'll get up to 600 rpm more.

You can get similar results to the Tower Hobbies Muffler by removing the baffel and adding about 2" of 1 1/4" or there abouts thin wall aluminum tubing between the muffler halves. I have done this successfully on several 40 to 55 size engines. You can gain as much as 1000 rpm.
There is also the mousse can mufflers if you want to build one

Thanks for the replies everyone! I am going to get the jett tuned pipe for it. the $50 price tag is pretty fair in my opinion plus alot of our pattern guys in my old club used the jett engines (well the little patterns planes did, i dont know about the big ones). i do have an old .46 that i will try th tower hobbies muffler on. thanks again!

The only problems with the Jett or Ultra Thrust mufflers is the rpm range. You need to prop the engine to run in the 14,000 range for the muffler to be effective. Generally this means a 10" prop or a very low pitch 11" prop. Just running a larger volume muffler like the Tower adds rpm with all size props. If you like to run an 11-5, 11-6 or a 12" prop, you may be better off with the Tower muffler. Although some guys like the scream of a 10-6 on a .50.

Hey everyone, I ran my 50sx for a long time on the tower muffler and loved it. I used it for 3D/fun-fly stuff. I ran a 12.25 x 3.75 APC prop on 10%.

Wow! With how well the tower mufflers are doing I think i will give it a shot instead. I didnt think about the rpm range with the jett mufflers... It makes sense because of how many rpms the jett engines spin at.

I get excellent results with the tower muffler on my 50sx. Currently running an APC 13x4 on my 50sx with tower muffler and get outrageous verticle with this setup. Best $15 investment you can make.

I have a os sx 50 on the test stand with a 10 6 just breaking in the engine. 2 tanks threw the engine. What prop should I use for high speed? For basic 3d? I would be placing this engine in a th kaos.
