Welcome to Club SAITO !
Barry i'll bet that go kart was a lot of fun.Of course today they fit yamaha r1 engines to them in your neck of the woods google yamaha r1 go kart spotted by police car will get you started.
Dave there was a rocket gold star with a pre unit set up..gearbox and engine separate but from the early sixties onwards the engines were all unit construction, meaning gearbox and engine in one single case as we know them today. The first pic is of my old 1970 lightning as i remember it and the second is of a daytona 500 same year.If your son still does track days on his yamaha r1 and gets a bit enthusiastic and bin's it,may i suggest salvaging the engine for a go kart project?

A friend in western Pa. had a BSA 441 Victor I rode a few times, it had a tremendous amount of torque. If you got a little enthusiastic on the 1-2 shift, it would lift the front wheel quite easily. The last time I saw it, it was under a pick up truck cap and nearly all the chrome was rusty. I'm sure it's part of the earth now. What a shame.
Woops, second picture is right. Well almost.

They were nearly whisper quiet with the shown stock muffler, a lot of guys installed those gutless fishtail mufflers, what an obnoxious sound.
This is the 1.00 you might be interested in swapping for a 1.30, I can remove the V-stacks if you don't want them.
Rubbish dave the one's pictured below sound fine.Did you ever ride one? I liked the inlet tubes you made for the 100 flat twin first time i saw them, gives the engine a character look.Jim a quick joke for you.Do you remember dazzer the cane toad sitting in the dogs bowl? wishing his mate baz would come back...where are you mate

Sorry Pete, I was speaking of the Harley Hummer, you're right the 441 Victor did sound fine, the twins even better.
I have considered shortening the stacks on the 1.00, I have no clue how long they should be. I like the look too.

I'm lucky to have a 182 twin dave it's in a hanger 9 82" taylorcraft and flies it well. Those carbs and that engine sure is pretty plus...having it mounted carbs down don't make any difference, they sound good even with full length flex pipes on the twin.
ps i forgot you meant fishtail pipes on two strokes, other than that they look pretty classy i reckon.

The Saito Twins are awesome engines. I had not owned one, but I still have a OS 1.60 twin still. I always wanted one of the 1.70 or 2.00 Saito radial engines. But I never got one yet.
When I owned a BSA 441 Victor years ago, the weak link was the clutch. The high torque out of the engine tended to tear up the clutch drum and clutch discs. It would literally gouge and tear up the slots on the drum and tabs on the discs. Also the single ball bearing clutch drum support went bad on you often too. I do remember many a 441 Victor laid up rusting due to bad clutches and you couldn't get parts for them anymore after BSA went belly up.

wow , I don't know what to say, I do know I would never treat an engine as nice as a Saito is like this guy does
