It has nearly the power of the .91 so it would power 60 sized planes with authority.

he likes the 72 much better what could possibly be wrong with the 82
Captcrunch44, I just checked for you on Horizon's site, both the 72 and 82 weigh the same, right down to the last number, I'm betting the Cam Gear is off a tooth, check that out

Captcrunch44,, more info for you from Bill Robison's posts>>>

QUOT) ""The FA-72 was the first of the mid block Saito engines to get the really hot valve timing. In the big block it was the FA-120S about 1997-1998""

edit, and just because some one knows a bit about engines doesn't mean they set the Tappet Lass correctly, Bill Robison recommends 0.0005 for the older cam's

more Cam/Tappet Lash info from Bill Robinson>> QUOTE) "The older one responds very well to a valve clearance setting of 0.0005" while the later should be set at 0.0015" lash"

hey Dave, I did some sneaking around, sneaking around Horizon's Part numbers, my Manual says my engine is Version 2004, it must be the year, well all the goody important parts are up to date,

Cam,
Rockers,
Valves,
Piston,
Rod,
Carb,

all have up to date part numbers.

the only question that's left, is, has Saito updated these parts lately without changing the Part Numbers ?? I don't think so,

to add, I can see why Bill Robison recommends to mount the Breather on the Cam Housing,, just by turning the engine over you can feel just how much Air that is pushed out the Rear Breather, it's very noticeable, so I will be moving the Breather to the Cam Housing, just as soon as I get new gaskets,

BTW, happy happy, the Saito will mount in the same mounting holes my OS 61FX did, and the front of the Saito is only 2mm longer than the OS, and it weights only 0.08 oz more than the OS,, it's going in my ShoeString, I did goo-d

Jim

Ok i will check some of those things out. Sounds like the valve’s are too tight and the a bigger prop might help. I think he tried a 13? But maybe 14X6 might just do the trick.

Cap, ask the guy that owned it what he didn't like about, you may get a clue,

you can burn a valve if the lash is too tight,,

see my post here about Props and Glow Plugs

Well he just can’t get them to ideal, don’t seem to have the power. I think he’s getting frustrated with them in General so he is sending them to me I will play with them and see what is up.

well, a Hotter plug and / or a larger Diameter prop should help,

also, as I said, the Cam Timing could be off from the Factory, people have reported that before ],, another thing, he could have had the Idle speed to low along with the Idle screw too lean,

just try these things one at a time

Jim, I moved the vent to the cam cover on my early 1.50 and accomplished nothing, so I bought a new cam com cover and put it back on the back. Just to experiment I even ran it with the vent both places just to see what happened, and again nothing. What initial is on the right mounting lug of your 1.00, Thanks

Cap, if you don't mind doing it, send me one of those .82's to scope out, I promise to send it back. A friend in Mich. is sending me a 90 TS to wring out for him.

Oh, so if the 82 weighs the same as the 72, that would be one heck of an engine for the Something Xtra! There you go Cap, put one on a SSE and see how it flies!

Dave, the letter on the right mounting tab is a "D",,

and on the front of the manual it says "Version 2004"

and on the back of the manual it says "Stock #SAIMAN1 Updated March 1 2004"

Jim

I remember when the 82 first came out and got a call from a friend at the Perry, Ga swapmeet about one NIB from a dealer. I bought it for around $230 I think. I've put about 50 minutes on it and it smoothed out and was sweet running on the last tank of fuel. It is on a new CA Models 40 sized Epsilon kit I built at the moment waiting for flying. I have to say this is the best Saito I've broken in.

Dave, you are right to point out my experience with an early model 125 as atypical of any Saito. Mine was probably from the first container to make it over here from Saito. I once had a talk with Jim (W8YE) and he related similar experiences with those early engines. At least he agreed that his needed around 3 gallons too for settling in and becoming a good running, stable Saito. His liked the 16" APC and mine likes 15" APC 15x6. I don't know why the early ones are like that, but some of the first 125s were just puny compared to others from the same time frame. Mine is a puny one, but I like it. I will admit to feeling like Pete for a long time though.

I've seen a Somethin' Extra fly with a 72 on it, but the owner didn't know much about Saitos. It was his first visit to our field. His put out a massive smoke trail, so it had to be low of power. He did say he had never checked the valve lash. Never saw the guy again. He mostly flew circles and landed. I wanted an hour with that plane to set the valve lash and sling the SSE around with that 72. I've got 1 and a half of them right now. The half SSE was stripped of its covering. The builder did an extremely poor job on it and I'm glad I found out what was under the Ultrakote. It would have broken apart if I had finished up the build and tried to fly it. I have contemplated extending the tail section a few inches one day. They are too short to tumble. Another wish is to put my trusty 72 on it.

Other than the HSN, I haven't touched my 72 since I installed it. It was pretty much new when I got it, having only a tank through it and never left the ground. I will probably do the valve inspection this season and see if I can get a little more out of it as it is a smokey little bugger, but hauls that SSE around nicely. It won't hover it, nor knife edge it well, but it will do everything else with ease.

OF, back on the Midget Mustang here,, I was checking the FA 100 fitment to the ShoeString's cowl,, then I had a thought,

I understand I may have to cut holes to fit my 100Twin in the Mustang's cowl, done that before with most engines,,

but I'm sure the 100T is wider than the Mustang's fuselage, so I have to wonder if I could actually twist the Mustang's cowl around the engine after the engine is mounted to the engine wall

A well flown twin and if i flew one that would be how it had to sound! beautiful synchro throttle up sound with the two saito 90 flat twins...i won't even mention weed wackers, the sound lets down the aeroplane.

There is a fair bit of leeway with flexible cowls sliding over an engine, bit fiddly sometimes. The world models midget has a longer w/span than my 55" cmpro version so i'm guessing the your midget fuse is at least as wide as mine.I've included a close up pic of the fa115 mounting and as you can see that fits nicely side mounted.

Barry it's nice to see other people fitting saito glow engines to an electric design,i did'nt realize that was a pattern plane till i looked it up.A saito 82 in that thing should absolutely hammer along. What prop?

ps never underate chinese composite fuses this one is beautifully made, light and very strong,it's so well finished people asked me if i'd painted it.After fitting the saito 115 and test flying it i went home and ordered three more of them which i still have in boxes.I felt sure that this blunt nosed rocket would hit the deck sooner rather than later,it's a testament to it's slow speed flying qualities.

Great looking and flying B-25! My uncle was a gunner on one these in WWII. There is a famous photo floating around on the web of his airplane. It's the one of the B-25 landing on an unfinished fighter strip in the pacific with the parachutes hanging out the tail gunner position to keep it from running off the island. The picture first ran in the Perry, Oklahoma newspaper and was picked up and published nationally thanks to the AP.
