Use Sullivan filters on all my planes and on field box fuel bottle. Have replaced the glow plug at least once and using a 4-stroke plug as recommended by Saito. The prop is a 14x7. Perry pump is a VP-30 regulating pump. Will try leaning the low side some more but have tried that once and it did pop and threw the spinner/prop.

with the 14X7 you are running your Saito 100 in a bit higher RPM range, well there are 3 things to say about that,
A) being a 4St your engine loves to be loaded more than a 2St would, and
B) Saito's are Camed to be loaded more than other brand 4St,
C) a correctly loaded engine is easier to tune, so you may wish to try a 14X8 prop to get your RPM down a bit,
I have seen engines that ran very badly because they were simply loaded incorrectly for the Plug and Fuel that was used in them, and a simple prop change to a larger prop fixed the problem in an instant.
1) engine 1 was a 160 4St with a 13X4 prop on it, the engine would stall as the pilot would come off the throttle to land or as accelerating to lift off, I sold the guy a 15X8 and his problem went away instantly, yet he could have gone to a 16X6 or 8 but no one had one,,
2) this engine was a .61 2St, it had a super light wood 9X4 prop on it, the tow guys worked 3 hours on it and it would stall every time (every time) when the wheels left the ground, I told the guy to put a APC 12X6 on it and he did, problem gone instantly,,
both of these^ engines could have been fixed in a different way, but it was not acceptable to their flying styles, and that was if, if they added a much colder plug and ran fuel with maybe 40% Nitro or higher.

Now your talkin jim,40% + nitro doing a big saito engine bench run in the shed at night with the lights out,nitro flames light the whole joint up,which reminds me...i think those fine short white hairs in the fuel may be a hemp based product,true story folks,i just remembered reading that here on these pages years ago.Any suggestions of a possible cross contamination in the shed will be frowned on

well the 125 ID is .008 larger than the 100's,,
here's the 3 ID numbers,,,
82) .315,,
100) .336,,
125) 344,,
but keep in mind that I found the ventures ID's are not totally round, they are slightly oval.
and remember that the 125's Manifold has a larger OD than the 100 and 82..
but, I just found today that the Barrels on all 3 Carbs are interchangeable, so you could put a 125 Barrel in the 100 or 82 Carb, and open up the Carb's Intake venture, I wonder how that would work
boy these Saitos are very interesting engines, the wonders just don't stop with them

no, but I took the Barrel from the 125 Carb you sent me and put it in my 82 Carb Body, it fits and works well, but I have checked more since my last post and I found that the 125 Barrel will not completely close-off the 82's Intake side of the Venture , I don't know if that will mess with the idle, it's something that needs to be tested

Waiting 91 will not stay running
I was at one of the club field today.
A father & son team brought a GP Sitk with Saito 91.
it has strong compression.
it will fire, but will not stay running anymore than around 5 seconds. It just abruptly stop on idle. It will run with glow ignitor on. New YS 4-stroke plug. Fuel is Cool power Heli 30% (23% oil).
It sounds like only the primed fuel is burning.
It will start at any throttle, but will not run anymore than 5 seconds.
it ran once to full Throttle with glow Ignitor on.
bleeder is not blocked. Valve gap appears to be a little tight, but not sure without feeler gauge,
bearings smooth. Prop is Master Airscrew 14x7 or 14x8.
any idea?

You forgot the cardinal rules of airplane purchase, never tell the wife what it cost, and never ever let her see you bring it home. Finally, whenever possible tell her you got it in a trade.

Yes mike if you always told the truth about saito engine purchases to the handbrake you'd look like this.
Pattern if you have double checked the fuel line set and it's all good you could reset the needles to roughly factory spec and re tune it.Wind the lsn back out to nearly flush with the lower bevel edge on the black plastic surround,then wind the hsn in fully and back it out 4 turns.
I just come to the conclusion that I have a serious problem.
I just got another new style 40 GK, old style 40 and a 180 in the mail this week. I have no idea what plane to put any of them in.

Well this info is just a repeat of past 180 HC runs
APC 18-6 wide idle 2400. wide open 7600
Xoar18-6 and 17-8 pretty much the same idle 2600 wide open 7800. all in 30% nitro unknown oil. Mix of some stuff.
Take away the 17-8 seemed like the go to prop but I would like to try 17-6 maybe get just a little more R’s.
I like R’s makes me sound like a pirate Hmmmm Captcrunch the Saito pirate sounds good to me. Lol

Captain saito pirate i'm firing a friendly broadside at your sailing warship.You should be getting a lot more rpm than you say,have you checked your tacho? eg; my fa182 twin idles at 1800 and swings a mas 18x6 at 8500 easy on 10% could it be the castor oil i was using?
Or you could check your tach by pointing it at a flourecent light. It should read 3600 rpm. Generally speaking tachs don't really go far out of calibration, they either work or they don't. Mostly failure to read a solid stable rpm can be placed on user error. Trying to read rpm in the shade, under trees on a sunny but windy day, during overcast conditions, pointing into the sun, having a reflective object like a vehicle or building on the other side of the prop or too near artificial lighting sources all can cause unstable or erroneous readings.
i just recently learned about reflective objects behind the prop. I was taching an engine with no problems, shut it off and and friend stopped by. He wanted to hear the engine run so I fired it up but when I tried to tach it the numbers were all over the place. He had parked his truck about 10ft from my test stand. The tach was shooting through the prop and reflecting off his truck causing big problems.
