Chris,

The numbers look good with that prop, and the idle is pretty good for being so new. That much smoke usually means it is too rich, but you said you backed off peak by about 300 RPM. I would say go ahead and fly it. Check out how it transitions and idles after you put the engine in the plane as things change when you do that. Mine was a bit more finicky at this stage.

Thanks.

It is in the plane, and the engine is mounted on it's side. I mounted it after the second tank, but continued with the break in procedure.

I wanted to make sure that it is a little rich since it is going to be used for hard flying 3D(not the fist couple flights though). I don't want any over heating issues.

Hey guys, I really need some help here. I have two Saito 100's that need parts. I need to get at least one of them going again. I cant get new parts until at least the last part of Sept. Surely someone out there has some good parts [ they dont have to be new just good] I need a crankshaft, rod, and cam. I have the other parts needed if I can get those three parts I can get one back in the air. Those three parts just have to be out there somewhere. Take a look in your parts drawer and help a guy out please. I have tried the link that was suggested but they dont have any parts in stock either. Thanks to all who are trying to help in advance. ORIGINAL: w8ye

The old 100T's had a air pump driven off the intake lobe of the right cam.

It's intended purpose was to pump air into the crankcase.

This pump is discontinued and you cannot get parts for it except the check valves.

It could be used to pressurize a tank but you would need to run a bleed off set up with it and a Cline regulator.
Thanks for the reply.

I normally get all my Saito parts thru Advantage Hobby and they tell me that all Saito parts come into this Country thru Horizon. Horizon gave Advantage the time frame for the backorder and I also talked with Horizon myself and got the same response. I have tried every dealer that I can find and so far no body has any parts in stock. Everything is on backorder. Thanks anyway, Harold

Horizon has been cutting their EOQ's mighty thin in the last year. Seems like they are always out of most everything?

I like to go on line and order one of everything that's out of stock so they will have to ship each piece to me as a separate order as the parts come in. The extra shipping cost is bound to eat up any profits gained by using a narrow Economic Order Quantity. Their system would work great if they got Just-In-Time delivery or better yet, overnight drop shipments but that is never going to happen from Japan.

That same manifold is used on the 50 and 56. It's not like it is anything new.

Jim,

You are right about Horizon's stocking issues. I purchase the jam nuts for the TurboHeader from them and I face backorders each time. Just for information, I had a batch of the 12mm 90 degree adapters made. If Saito runs out there is another source.

Hi guys, could you help me, my engine wont stop getting roasting hot, even though there is sufficient air going in and out of it. The fuel mixture isnt lean at all. Also, the engine wont stop cutting off, and caused me to crash while cutting in a flat spin.

Can anyone explain why this is happening?

thanks in advance

Jonathan,

You need to supply more information - Which engine? What prop? What fuel? How is engine mounted? How old is engine?

its a Saito 125, mounted inverted, spinning a APC 17x6, running on Magnum 30% heli fuel (which i think is the cause...but if i dont use that, i wont have the power needed) its around 1yr and a half. it's been running on 30% fuel for around 6 mnths now. It was running on Magnum 20% heli fuel before.

Thanks

Jonathan,

The 30% fuel isn't as big an issue as the prop. I think the APC 17x6 is a bit too much especially if the engine is new. You did not mention RPM. You need to get the peak rpm's to mid to low 9's and start from there. My guess is you have it over prop'd and the 30% burns hotter also.

Grabbing at straws-----but this actually happened to me! Had a hot run on a Saito 180------landed and killed the engine. After it cooled I started it up again while richening the mixture-----hot again even on the ground. Killed the engine and took everything to the work bench. The culprit a large piece of ?????? blocking over one half of the fuel filter.

Removed that, checked the complete fuel system and returned the next day--------no more problems. The ?????? had reduced the effective diameter of the fuel tubing to but a few thousandths.

I never heard of this kind of cause/effect relationship before (nor again)-----and I've been flying a l-o-n-g time!
------Just something to check out. Unlikely but it can happen.

Present day glow fuel as well as gasoline sometimes has filter fuzz in it that will catch on the wire screen of the your filter or if no filter, in your needle valve.

The Saito 125 uses the needle valve for the 100 which has a part number of SAI10085

The Ebay one is for a 120 Saito and the carb is rather different.

I hate to hear those having problems getting parts; I just got phenomenal service from Horizon. I sent an old .65 (with air bleed carb), a .91S, and a 1.00 in for service. I wanted bearing changes in the 1.00 and .65, and a new needle body and check the crankshaft in the .91 (crash damage). They not only did that, but put new bearings in the .91, replaced the pushrod rubbers and intake pipe on the .65, plus gave me a new type carb (with the needle adjusted low end) for the .65, without charge for the extra stuff! All are out of warranty. I sent them payment including shipping, and they called and said they paid the shipping. To reimburse me for the extra money I sent, they included velocity stacks for two of the engines. That's what I call good service; oh, it was a three week turnaround time, too.

Hello to all: im having problems with my 1.25 installed in a H9 spitfire. it runs well on the ground but i cant get a really top end out of it in the air. tried a two blade 16x6 did alright, 16x8 not to good top end. then went to 13x8 three blade, worse and then 14x9 three blader, worse still. i have only about three tanks of fuel run through it so far. I tried holding a tack on it and running it up to peak rpms then back it back bout a 150 rpms. how much should i back it back from peak. i have a o.s. 91 on a H9 p40 and I though this would be faster. What am i doing wrong? any help please!!

Something like a 14-10 for speed or a 15-6 for low speed thrust should be used with this engine? I have a 15-8 on mine for sport flying.

RCWI,

It sounds like your engine is still in the initial break in period discussed in the manual. Do you have some sort of test stand where you can run the engine? It really isn't ready for flight yet by the sound of things. I suggest that you back off of your peak RPMs at WOT by 300-500 RPMs for the next tank or two. This engine is probably developing low power if the low speed needle valve has not been leaned out some.

I have been running in my new Saito 82. I am amazed at the amount of liquid coming out the breather hole. I built a catch can for the blow by and got about 4oz from 15 minutes running. The in valve was tighter than .002", the ex valve was .002". I loosened both up to .003 and pre lubed rockers, pushrods, and bottom end prior to running. Fired right up. Running for 10 min at 4k, 5k, 6k. Need to get another 5 min at 7K. I am working to finish 40 size Midwest Zero. Will finish run in this weekend and hope to get on an airplane for some air time. I don't get any enjoyment out of extended bench running, but I think I will really like flying with this!
Thanks for all the info, MikeB
