If you are using muffler pressure and a CHECK VALVE to pressurize your tank, then to hold your finger of the end of the muffler for a few flips should build up enough pressure to have fuel at the regulator.

Cool. Now, will a prop flip or two pull enough vacuum to get the regulator to open and let fuel into the carb. I've never started an engine with a Cline before.

To pressurize the tank may take a half dozen brisk flips with your finger over the muffler outlet.

Don't forget the check valve.

I have a bunch of 2 cycle in my cars i leave them at bdc.they have a pinch i have been setting my saitos at bdc right were the comperssion starts so both valves are closed . is this a good place to leave them ?

I don't think that any certain position matters. I never check.

Boog, I make sure mine is CCW against compression so neither valve is part way open with the spring compressed. Can't do that on my .90 triple.

Does anyone ( Hobbsy?) have any numbers for a saito FA-45 mkII or FA-50? I want to know about how fast they'll turn what prop so I can get an idea of what kind of plane they might pull.

I'll find out for you this PM when my neighbors are all up and about. I have to break in a new OS LA .10 anyway, so I'll have everything out. What props, I'll run a Graupner 12x5 first.

That would be great! As for props, I'm not sure...The 12x5 sounds like a good start, and maybe something with an 8 pitch in case I decide to try something that needs a little more speed, like a war bird. Do you like the Graupner props? Where can you get them online? I'm looking for an 18x6 or maybe a 17x7 for my 1.80 on a Super Stearman, and I would love to get something efficient in a wood prop. Are the Graupners wood?

Thanks, Hobbsy, and you too, mono wing. Looks like that prop is right in the sweet spot for that .45 If I do pick one up, I'll be able to use some of the props I bought to try on my Funtana 40 with an OS 46 ax. It turns a MA 12x5 at 11,800rpm if I remember right.

Hi hobbsy, you should run a jam nut on that engine. I beleive all four strokes should run jam nuts due to potential pre detonation.

Just my opinion.

btw that test stand looks fantastic!! Is that bought or built?

Thanks

I bought one of those myself. I hated to spend that much money on it, but I don't regret it now that I have used it for the most part of a year.

MAGNIFICENT machine work!

The old .40, .45 and the new .30s do not come with lock nuts nor do they need them. The PSP is mounted on a B&B Vibra-Loc soft mount that isn't too soft.

I have two Saito 125s. One is on a 29% Aeroworks Edge 540. The other is on a 71" wingspan Spitfire from Black Horse Models. I am in the process of building a 1/12th scale of the B-29 FIFI. It will be powered by 4 Saito 125s

Rex, the old Saito .40 in the picture with the .45 is no slouch either. I ran it today on the same fuel and plug as the .45 but used a Bolly 10.5x6 which it turned at 10,750 with safe running (mixture wise) at 10,500 but too fast for my taste. I used a .50 pipe and modern cast muffler. Maybe tomorrow I can run my brand new .40a and see how it compares. I bought it from MotorMan37 and it's barely broken in.

I had not thought of that Hobbsy. Among the shooting sports fraternity there has been endless discussion over the years about leaving magazine springs compressed vs unloaded, actions cocked or not and the like. There seems to be as much agreement there as there is on RCU about castor and ATR.

Given the choice it would certianly seem logical to leave springs as relaxed as possible.

I don't want to start ANOTHER controversy here at RCU, but the way springs are worn out is by cycling - not remaining at either a compressed nor relaxed state.

Colt .45 ACP magazine springs have been proven to retain their power for decades while remaining loaded. There is no reason to think that valve springs would be any different.

My four strokes tend to seek a crankshaft position where spring pressure is minimized when left alone. But they will not go to TDC on the compression stroke.

I just purchased a slightly used .82. can't wait to get it. Anything I should look out for on this before I run it? I will check all the standard things, including valves. I'll probably fly it on my Funtana 40...any prop suggestions?
