I am now reassembling that Saito 65. I see the dimple on the timing gear, but I'm not sure I see the crank mark. Is the small groove on thr crankshaft the other timing mark?

Bring the crank to Top Dead Center, and the dot on the cam gear goes straight down.

well igot got the cline reg to fit on my saito .82 which i was having tuning problems with, that turned out to be the exhaust i was using( 12mm flex pipe from saito) no matter what i did, i could not creat enough back pressure for vent line even after baffling the pipe. anyway, i went back to the standard exhaust and problem was fixed straight away with a perfect tune on the ground, but in the air it wasn't holding proper tune, due to fuel tank location in my fliton 330 extra freestyle. cline has fixed everything, except i still have 1 more problem and i need some help! as it is my first 4 stroker. idles fine at 2200 rpm and 9300 at the top (200 rpm richer than peak), transition from idle to half or full throttle is great and fast, but if i slowly increase throttle from idle to around 1/3 trottle it start flucating fast and slow revs and somtimes dies from being to lean. if i advance throttle it is ok again or if i go back to idle. i think i have it too lean on the low end, but if i back out neddle it gets to fat for a reliable idleand also shakes far to much. Can anyone help shed some light on what i know i am doing wrong?

I'm not sure what the problem is with your engine, but I have to ask what prop, fuel, and glow plug you're using, and is the fuel fresh?

I have a saito 40 and a 45 with straight pipes a 50 and a 56 and a 91 I love them all especially the 40 and 45 and the 91 they are older motors they seem to have more power then comparable brands

w8ye, do you think you can shed some light on tuning? i have followed saito information web site tuning guide, i can keep leaning low end almost till it quits and still get good throttle transition. it idles best like that with out to much vibes. am i just far to lean on the ls?

It's hard for me to tell about the mixture without being there.

Most of my Saitos have tended to have been rich in the mid range especially with some props but I don't use Perry pumps.

Some of the instructions for the Perry pump is to try to adjust the needles as you would without the pump. If your midrange is rich, decrease pump pressure and if your midrange is lean then you need to increase your pump pressure.

I have a Saito 62, mounted inverted on my Sig Senior Arf. The muffler hugs the cowl very close, and will require quite a bit of dremeling to the cowl for clearance. I'd rather drill a nice clean hole thru the cowl, similar the the .72 in my U Can Do.

Could anyone recommend a part number for a longer exhaust tube? All suggestions are welcome.

Check these out they may save you a bunch of cutting, look for Turboheader in the MarketPlace, I ran them with the 90 degree adapters turned in and then out just to see how they looked. They will be more flexible on your engine since the exhaust is on the side of the cylinder instead of the corner.

I go way too lean on my .82 when trying to get a low idle. I just tune it too get a perfect transiton . Keep turning the LS until you start to lag on the transition then richen it up an 1/8~1/4 turn tap the HS needle back and set the idle down. You should set the idle down as you go but this works for me.Still any leaner after that and the same thing on the transiton.
Im at 2700 with my idle right now. Now I can go lower with the throw for idle but the plane likes to jump .Great transition! No deadsticks!
Spins the 14x4w at 10,700 rpm and is starting to peak up @ 11,000 [X(] may have to give that 14x6 a try or cut back on nitro.

Basically Ive thrown tuning for idle out the window. Its going to do what its going to do. The transition is what to get tuned in. It determines if that pullout from hover is going to fail or not .

michealh, thanks for that reply, i think what you said makes sense! i was doing a blender and came very close to ground, as i went to slowly throttle out she died on me! had to do a belly wack landing to the amusement of other club members. only tail wheel and prop broke! i found the 14x6 apc prop far better suited to the .82 than the 14x4w, just my expirience. also she will idle anyhow when a bit richer, just a jackhammer and a half, ireckon if you were in china and put your head on the ground you would hear my engine bouncing the plane all over the runway! ho ho ho! gotta go find me a nice transition! ciao!

I can't say that I've tried it myself, but I've read that a 15x4 works well for 3D on an .82. It might give you a better idle, too.

I am using S&W 20% Saito blend fuel and it works awesome,tons of power,idles smooth
with smooth transition.The chemist at S&W said he runs 30% nitro in his but you must run 15% through it after running or you will be putting in bearings all of the time,because 30% nitro is really caustic.He said 30% really wakes up this motor !!!

I stole those from other engines, I ordered two more that Jim is sort of customizing by putting the pressure taps so they'll point inward on the TS .90.

Should have a prop swap forum for all these props that didnt work out well Im going to get a 15x4 and a 14x6 to try. The 4w's put out a ton of thrust and keep the engine tamed a 14x4 MAS was too small for the engine. The 4W's also make the control surfaces too sensitive to my liking.

i think i may also try a 15x4w on the .82. i like the lower pitch props on my other planes as i find it easier to hover etc. i find with a 6 there is less "grey" area if you know what i mean. either it sarts sinking towards the ground a fraction or one more notch of throttle and is creaping up! with the 4 pitch, it's easier to get the throttle just right. this is also why the throttle transition is sooo important as michealh said! less you like falling out of the sky!

MA has 4"" pitch props that are not "W". the apc 15x4W may be just a bit too much prop, it has been said to load the motor a little too much. the MA15x4 is one i plan to try, should give slightly higher rpm, granted a bit less bite being a standard width blade. also, MA props are a bit more flimsy than the apc, they seem to bend more, good or bad i don't know. try for high 9k's to 10k
