usually one would flick it over by hand a few times for prime or to find the "sweet spot" with regard to the compression stroke before energizing the glow plug and engaging the starter, that would take care of any worry of slaming your crank/rod/ piston assy against a flooded cylinder head. I usually use a starter for my first start of the day on all my motors, after that even the larger ones are kittycats and purr on the first flick for the rest of the day.

I have a 56 that is so tuned in it brings tears to my eyes and a spin with the electric starter sets it to purring quick as you please.

My new 115 is another story with respect to the electric starter. It's not a big two handled model but it is 'heavy duty' and it will not spin the 115 at all. I have to start this rascal by hand every time.

Try the starter on your car battery

Leedees,

Try turning the 115 just through the compression stroke then backwards just a bit 'till it's tight, then energize the plug and hit it with the starter. that way the starter has about a revolution and a half to build RPM and torque to get it through the compression stroke. My 25 year old regular ol' Sullivan starter will crank my 56's through 120's with ease regardless of relative stroke timing, ( on one of the 120's though It does struggle a bit through the first couple of compression strokes...bought that engine used from a guy at the field, he won't give up the break in secret but it's so tight that it's difficult to roll over by hand even with a 16" prop for leverage, Idle all day at 1000 and all but hover a 12 1/2lbs Royal/Marutaka P-51) On the 150 I have to "preset" the Stroke position before start. Using a standard Hobbico 12V gel cell. Or like W8ye says...use a car batt. Then you could prob'ly turn over a 25 hp Merc boat motor!! Doesn't hurt the starter any...12V is 12V, just a bunch more umph behind it(amps).

That 120 sounds like a keeper!

Thanks gentlemen, good advice all around. It should have occurred to me a lack of amperage could be the problem. Next trip out to the field I'll give it a go and report back.

It will be a few days though, the wind has been blowing 20-25mph all week here. I probably shouldn't even mention it as know I don't have much room to complain about the flying weather in south Florida.

We must be lazy modellers at our club then..most guys hit it first with an electric starter and then if it won't fire start looking elsewhere. They start easy enough by hand and saves me carrying a lot more stuff around that will complicate my day, cheers.

It requires a intake manifold O ring to seal it to the carb. You can take the venturi to the hardware store and select one to fit

I go all day with my .82s on that cheap Tower Hobbies starter with the Hobbico cordless pack . Will give me about seven starts on the 1.80
Have to lug the car battery when I take that plane . [8D] Once you get that first fligh its all gravy then. Back flipping is easy enough to do also .

G'day Saitoists. Well my 90TS took to the air today for the first time. It is temporarily located in my ARF Kadet Senior and despite being a little rich, it had no problems hauling the large model into the air with authority. I did not try anything violent as this is the continuation of its running in and it is coming up very nicely. Idle is getting better all the time and first flick starts are normal. I do prime the carby with about 1cc of fuel as suggested in the instructions, then connect the plug power, turn over while firmly holding the plug and if I get a bump on both cylinders, I just give it a smart flick and away it goes.

Idle sounds amazing and is worth the price of admission and in the air the flex pipes give a nice crackle in the exhaust without being too noisy. Even the owners of the big 100cc petrol engines were impressed.

G'day W8YE and Patxip. Thanks for the kind comments. I had an interesting weekend and the first flight of the 90TS was the cream on the cake

On Saturday I took my Airsail 40 size Auster AOP9 for its first flight. It was NOT un-eventful. It lurched all over the place as the OS 52S in it was far too powerful for it but once I pulled the power back to near idle, it flew reasonable well. I would have put a Saito in it but when I discovered I could not I sold it to a friend. He finished it and put the OS in because it is narrower and fitted the tight space available. The OS is an interesting engine. It is fairly powerful but it just seems rough to me in the way it runs compared to my Saitos. I will have to come to grips with this plane. It looks nice in the air but it is a handful under too much power.

Today (Sunday) the 90TS had its first outing but I also flew a Heron Gas Buggy that I bought from the same friend with a little 1.5cc diesel and again, the little Silver Swallow was far too powerful for the plane. Luckily it is a diesel and I can tune it badly and it will still run at lower power. It has no throttle. At high power, it Dutch rolls and is totally unpleasant. I also think the C of G needs to move forward.

I also gave a young lad his first flights with my Saito 56 powered Kadet Senior. For the first ten minutes he was pretty rough but by the end of his second flight he was doing tidy figure eights and generally flying quite well. Another success for my Kadet and its little Saito and a pleasing end to a very satisfactory weekend.

The picture is of my Saito 56 powered Kadet Senior nestling beneath my H9 quarter scale Cub with its Saito 120. It flies really well. Must take it out again soon.

OF, what is your real first name if you don't mind? The .90TS does not have the hemi like canted outward valve arrangement like the other Saitos. I think the .90TS has what we call bathtub combustion chambers similar to OS and Enya, maybe wedge would a more accurate description.

If you don't prime the engine the electric starter will spin it right up, it only takes a couple of revolutions to get fuel to the carb and it will be purring like a kitten.

Hi charlie,i understand what you are saying.More referring to the guys i see using them and most don't bother to wind the prop back.I see very few people use an electic starter gently so in a mechanical sense i was relating that to how an automotive starter on your car works, geared down and relatively benign compared to the gut wrenching 12/18/24 volt green hulk machine a lot of people smash into the spinner ready or not,it's only a little saito

Thanks Pete my GrandParents and most Aunts and Uncles all called me Davey, also I've been variously called Hobo, Hobby, Hobbsy, Davco, Daver and SOB occasionally. Nearly all my Phone Company Buds called me Hobbsy, so I am he.

Alright, My first Saito was a beautiful running engine untill I slammed it into a metal pole on takeoff, this metal pole hit the sideways mounted saito .40 right on the two push rod tubes & bent them to hell, The engine wont turn over because since the pushrods are bent one of the valves is depressed? Everything else looks to be good.
My question, is there anyway to fix this engine, or just toss it?
