Oh no... didn't fly it.. no wings on it! just a couple of quick circles on the ground. This plane has already been painted (all white) by the previous owner, but I'm going to change the colors.

Supposedly the previous owner made a few flights with it several years ago, then lost the interest to finish it. He had an engine on it that was way underpowered. Power isnn't a problem now, but I do have several years of sitting in the shop to clean off of it.

So, I've got to go over it with prep-sol anyway, just to get the old glow residue and grime off of it. I'm going to use Nelson's water based poly to paint it, so it should cover anything but lacquer pretty well, as long as the surface is prepped right.

Like I said... wish me luck. if all fails, I'll re-cover it in the same Yellow that I was going to paint it, then do the striping on top of that. I just hate to stip off covering!

I took the original cowl (too short for this motor), wiped it down pretty quickly and painted it with the Nelson's and a brush... 2 coates. I was amazed at how it turned out... not a single brush stroke, and no evidence of oil contamination. I did the same with the firewall area on the fuse... it turned out well also. I'm encouraged, but won't be suprized at anything that happens.

I'm going to spray the rest of the plane, several light coates.

Is the Nelson's water based poly going to be fuel proof?

My Spitfire is coming along. I have a reconditioned E bay saito 90 to push her. Just ordered a Pitts muffler which should arrive in a few days. She is starting to look like she is supposed to.

Ed, here is my current project, a Bruce Tharpe Flyin King with a Saito 1.00 twin, my one concession to the heavier engine is the elevator servo mounted in the rear. As you can see I change my mind about the mounting heighth, no biggy. The 1.00 will wear two Turbo Headers. I ain't done with the front yet either.

Nice!

One of the guys at our field has a Flying King with a DA100 on it.. .uses it to drop remote control parachute jumpers. Those are a lot of fun, once you figure out what direction you're headed.

He may have a Super Flyin King, that will be a future project for a Saito 4.50 radial, soons I git rich. I need to finish the ACE Big Bingo whose wings you see behind the FK and fuse off to the right. Lots a projects goin on.

The Big Bingo is one nice flying airplane. A friend of mine has one with a Saito 1.80 in it. Great match.

Yes.. I think it is the super.. it must be about a 10 foot wingspan, but built like a tank.

there's lots of Saito 450's out in the market.. I got mine for $900.. new in box. I don't know how it woud compare to a 75 or 80cc gas motor, but it sure sounds like a beast!

The Super Flying King does like to dip the nose when ever you use the rudder, more and a typical sport plane, but probably very scale. I guess you would get used to it pretty quick, but if it's little brother has the same tendencies... get it up high before you move your left thumb!

I also have an Ace Big Bingo. Wings and tail feathers are all done, but I need to scratch build the fuse from the plans as the fuse parts along with the cowl and canopy were missing from the "short kit" I won at a club auction. I have a saito 180 as well; is it a better match for the Bingo than a 33cc Alpina gasser? What should the Bingo weigh without the engine? The Alpina weighs more than the Saito, but the Saito would need a much larger fuel tank. Should I move the firewall back to accommodate the heavier Alpina, or move the servos and battery to the rear to balance? It is one of several winter projects so a decision does not need to be made anytime soon :-)

I have an extra electronic CDI. has anyone put one on a Saito 180 with a 1/4-32 spark plug and run it on no nitro methanol/oil mix?

Well, lets see, that Alpina at 33cc is 2+ cubic inches, 33x61=2.013, I have a Maloney 1.25 I bought specifically for the Bingo, then I got a Tartan 1.34 for it, converted both of those to Diesel and I have the Saito 1.50. both of us are going to be cypherin on the same stuff. We'll have to compare notes now and then as we build. The Saito is not a given, yet. I also have a SuperTigre 3000 converted to Diesel, If the Bingo turns out to weigh a ton, that will be engine of choice.

I have an old Rhino (Cox) 1.4 that was converted to glow before I got it. It looks a lot like the Maloney. Is it related"? Would the Rhino be a candidate for diesel conversion? I was going to fit the electronic CDI and spark plug to it and run it on no nitro methanol, but will it run straight glow on no nitro methanol?

We will have to talk our way through the Bingo build processes.

Hello dave and spaceworm i have a question and you've raised my interest.Weed wackers sound awful to me in scale planes.Are you saying a g62 can run on deisel and have a throttle,swing a big prop and sound nearly as good as a 220?

I don't know if you guys have seen it, but there's an ad in the Classifieds today listing about 30 different Saito motors, most look new. All sizes, up to the 450, which they have listed for less than $900. I don't need anything right now, but if I did, I'd give them a closer look.

I need some help/suggestions here folks.

On the well broken in Saito 100 on my GB Extra I think I have to flush out my spray bar. I put a new cam and followers in it adjusted the valves. It ran great except I seemed to loose my wonderful idle it had before. It idles for as much as 20 seconds or so but then will either load up and quit or just die out like it's lean. I can adjust the idle screw about 1/3 to 1/2 turn each way from the "perfect" setting I had before but the optimum is very close to where I had it originally. I don't think I got the cam off a tooth because it's fine at all throttle ranges and when it idles for a bit it is normal and smooth before it quits. HSN is adjusted 2-300 RPM rich of peak. I've tried leaving the ignitor on the plug and it makes no difference. I tried a new plug and no difference.

Would I want to pull out the idle screw and needle valve and then back flush from the idle screw end out the needle valve end?

Any other ideas welcome.

Sounds like your cam is retarded 1 tooth. On a Saito this is 14 degrees and the engine will run well otherwise

Well that's good to know That's probably it then. I used a small wire in the hole to help hold the cam but it's really hard to keep my big fingers holding it in position while I set it down Any good tips on how to be sure it's right. The factory must have a special tool?? Thanks

Why not install the piston before this check? With the rear cover removed, the pisition of the crankpin can be seen to insure it being at TDC. If all is ok, then just button it up withour having to remove the cylinder just to install the piston (!?!)
