What size is the nuts on the rocker adjusters? I cant find my set of micro wrenches. (think my dad stole them)

The smallest I could find was a 4mm. Way too big.

Guys, my Saito FA-80 engine came with this glowplug.

Is this the so-called "idle bar" plug ?

I switched to an O.S. type #F, was that wise ?

The idle bar plug is a Fox Idle bar plug.

You should run the OS "F" plug.

That glow plug you displayed is a old beat up used Fox Idle bar long RC plug.
I would suggest you use either a OS F or a Fox Miracle plug. I find the Fox Miracle plugs work really good, so it isn't worth the extra money to buy a OS F plug.

Hello, fellow Club Saito members !

I could use some help from you.......My Saito 91 started making sounds like marbles in a can ![&o] I have it all torn down except for the crankshaft. How do I remove the crank so that I can get to the bearings ? I can't get the thrust plate off. Do I need a special tool for this ? Everything else looks good so far. Also, when it comes time to reassemble how do I time the cam to the crank ? ( I see a "dot" on the cam gear ). Any help from you experienced Saito engine guys would be of great help to me. If you would rather PM me please do ! Is there a "instructional website" for Saito rebuilding on the net ?

here you go a how to do video. It is basically the same as doing it for a 2 stroke engine, except you have to get the camshaft out of the way first.
i use a hot air gun made for heat shrink tubing, then I can do it indoors and not outside.

I just checked the thrust of a 115 using a 15X7 APC and got 5lb of thrust. Does that sound right? Didn't check the rpm. Going to hobby shop tomorrow to pick up some Xoars to do some more testing. Engine is set a little rich. Only have about 3/4 gal through the engine.

Yes it does,the thrust figures.So you have done your valve gaps?there is a very small black spanner with the tool kit that fits over the rocker adjustment nuts well use it

Scoot, I checked my .80 yesterday and the lock nuts on it are 4mm, your 1.15 should be the same.

I have a Twist 60 with a Saito 125 that I really like. The engine bolted in where the 100 was and doesn't require any special balancing

I'm not sure of the exact thrust that should be produced by the Saito 115, but I'm certain it should be at least twice as much as you have stated, assuming the throttle is wide open, the engine is broken-in and the carb is adjusted properly.

14x8 9600 apc
15x7 9300 apc
16x8 8000 xoar

The hobby shop is low on props in the 15-16 range. They had 100's of props, just not much in that range. Dang.

I dont plan to run the 16x8, just had it hanging on the prop wall. Ordered some 15x8's and 16x6 xoars. They be here mon or tues. Going to test the 14x8 in the air tomorrow back to back with the 15x7. I guess I could cut down the 16x8 tonight.

Ok, my Reliant kit says it should have either a 60 two stroke or a 1.20 fourstroke.  This is a 90's era Marutaka / Royal  kit which should weigh in at about 5kg (12.5 pounds)
A Saito 82 fits neatly into the cowl and I think the HP would equal a 60  twostroke of the era but people I am looking for suggestions here. The 1.20 Saito would both protrude from the cowl sideways and lenghth ways likewise the 91 though less so where as the 82 fits inside the cowl beautifully on the Saito mount as well
As I see it there is considerable weight savings with both modern batteries, receivers and servos as well as the modern engines so I guess it is down to what weight would an 82 fly with at about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle in a scale manner.  I will be adding flaps to the mix though the increased weight would be in the servo area only (2 off). I am using a light f/glass cowl instead of the plastic one and a f/glass engine insert, they both give an increas over the plastic cowl of some 1 ounce, the engine mounts are the same weight (slightly lighter) than the supplied mount.

The Saito 82 seems to be very small for this model at the weight range that you are estimating. Even with a few ounces saved here and there, I can't see this engine flying this plane very well at 10+ pounds.

I agree a 125 would be more like it if you want to fly at half throttle or a bit more and an eight pitch prop maybe 16x8 good luck fnq

An .82 sized four-stroke is a good replacement for a strong .45 to .53 sized engine. Not a strong .60 schneurle ported engine.

FNQ i have a 46 size decathlon arf from seagull and as it's a fairly popular plane maybe someone here can tell you what one of those weighs as a bit of a comparison to your reliant.The 62 saito with a 12x6-13x6 prop flew it very scale power wise but you were always over half throttle except in the circuit.The 82 fixed all that and more,it flies scale at half throttle now with a 14x6.Post a pic of the reliant and maybe someone will have an idea re cowl and engine fit,cheers mate.

Thanks for the replies.  I have found in comparing 90's era engines to the current crop two things crop up
1/ Weight, modern engines especially 4 strokes are lighter
2/ Power modern engines especially 4 strokes are producing more power for a given capacity.
My best example is a Goldberg Cub that flew very well on a Sato 50 in Malaysia in the early 90's and now the same plane appears to perform as well with a 46 fourstroke (Enya) and I am lead to believe that it goes ok with a Saioto 40.
I had intended to put a Saito 91 into it when I first bought it, weight and power equalled a big OS that was powering a similar Staggerwing at the time in KL.
But now we have these lightened units with more HP which gives one pause to ponder.  I have 2 classes I can enter this plane in one is fine scale where every thing is judged at close quarters and the other is stand off where the a/c is judged from 3 metres.  In the latter case rocker covers protruding from the cowl would not be as evident (though no penality is to " be incurred" in either case for protruding engines and I could "hide" the extended crank with a mod to the dummy engine.
I have a Great Planes Decalathon that should take a 50 ok and I think I can get my hands on a big Cub to experiment any way keep the sugestions coming.  All greatly appreciated
