Yeah Hobbsy, it was likely a gravity surge.


before we had cheap digital cameras I remember killing a few planes with the "how low can you go high speed inverted passes" and the gravity surge gets the plane.
Airplane bits and pieces would be scattered way off down range after one of those.

The most impressive crash I've seen was a Diamond Dust a couple of feet off the ground, wide open, and inverted. They guy pulled back to go up. It looked like a large, round mound of confetti in the air. Not much scattered, just the big confetti plume.

i all way's make new words when i crash a model. i had a 17x4W apc come apart in mid aid. it ripped the motor out of the fire wall. lol most of us know what the will do to the cg. other than the motor ripping out the fire wall and watching my saito 125 falling to the ground . i made pelnty of new words. as i landed a twist 60 now the hard part was flying it back wards . seeing how the tail was now the heavy side . i made a real nice landing didn't even bounce

I am having trouble tightening down the carb / intake manifold on a Saito 180. I replaced the metal gasket and added an o ring, but the carb still moves when I fully tighten the manifold. Any thoughts on what I can to get the manifold and carb secure?

On crashes, the best I have ever seen and it comes under the heading of "crash and burn" was our current MAAA secretary crashes a jet powered a/c at a local club in Brisbane.  It developed elevator flutter with the usual consequences for the JPX engine and attached pieces. It burned out 5 acres of grass land for which he was charged a considerable sum by the local fire brigade who then informed him that they nhad a council contract for a controlled burn over the same area the following w/end.  The most interesting was a Swiss Miss burying itself into the turf (up to the firewall) at the Nowra Nats.
On the carby thing, use RTV 105 or similar as a gasket substitute

some times you have to.you have some off the wall duck tape.you put it on the throttle linkage . hanger9 likes stuff to be on the wrong side for a Saito...[&:] so how bad dose it look? a duck taping job will it fly in NASCAR?

by the way a 17x apc propeller max rpm is 11,176. and this is what happens when you go past it![&o] as posted above landing backwards is just so much fun ...
now for the safety tip. make sure to stand behind the propeller. do not to the side or in the sux side of the propeller . you never can tell when a saito . will throw its propeller off at you . or if it brakes and now its sticking in you !

On APC props.  We had a lot of trouble with APC props stretching on Duration models in the "old days".  It happened mostly on Rossi 40's that were set up as stop / go engines (no throttle).  It has happened on some of the YS engines and the odd Saito fed on steriods.  Best way to ensure that there are no catastrophic events is to always check the prop for stretch marks.  They usually occur around the hub to blade root section.  They appear as wrinkles and usually occur on one side only resulting in an out of balance prop, which rapidly leads to engine destruction.  Only thing to do with them is to destroy them when it occurs (so they aren't used again) and then consider using $60 plus carbon fibre props
I have made a mould of my Bolly carbon fibre props (12.5 x 5.5 and 13.5 x 6.5 ) and I will be making moulds of the rest of the ones I have so I can lay up some competition props in the future.  I will be able to experiment further with blade twist to see what thrust I can get out of them but that is a story for another day

I've been lurking in the background for a while and decided to end that now.
I have a 120, a 125, 182 twin, 200 Ti 300 twin carb , and a 325 radial. had 2x72's awhile ago, but swapped for the 125.
I love each one, hard to beat!

Finished with the rebuild of my FA-91. Frank bowman ring and a set of ss bearings properly rated for the motor/load/speed; sealed front bearing and open cage main. After running about 30 oz(3 tanks) of 15% on the fencepost alternating between super rich, just sloppy rich, and rich at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, varying, for break in on the new ring I am getting a max RPM of 8700 with a MAS 14x6 wood and 7550 on a 14x7 Graupner 3 blade. According to Clarence Lee in his 1993 review(link below) on the FA-91 he claimed 10K on a 14x6 zinger using 10%. Valve lash is set for optimum performance, so what gives? Where am I loosing 1300 RPM or was Clarence just blowing smoke on this one? Would a wood Zinger really have that much less drag or be that much off/lower in pitch relative to a MAS?

Still interested in what Mike Early is getting on his .91 and what prop, or anyone else for that matter.

Well, one of the two FA-62's is done; Bowman ring and a new set of bearings. Over the years they have both sagged a bit in performance after an initial increase in performance since new. The best performance I had logged on them had been 9900 max RPM on a MAS wood 12x6 with 15% nitro about two years ago. Both were purchased new and gained about 200 RPM during use over the first two years.
I guess my after run maint has lacked a bit after that because they have both equally decreased to around 7600-7800 max on the same setup. I've averaged about 4-6 gals of fuel per summer between them over the 4-5 years I've had them. They've both been stellar in their performance overall-even though lacking a bit recently. Looking forward to having the outstanding "zest" that has endeared them to me back again now.

Front sealed bearing on this rebuild was stiff and had some resistance to turning. The main bearing is shielded(not sealed) and had very slight roughness when turned. Amazing how just a tiny bit of resistance can so greatly affect the performance. Compression has always been outstanding.

After rebuild and two 10 oz fuel tanks break-in I'm getting a solid 10,100 peak on the 12x6 MAS and a good 8,000 with a 12x8x3blade MAS. I'll be running a 12x8x3 MAS on this one in a 58" ME-109 and richen up the mixture for @ 7700-7800.
Very happy with this and looking forward to working on the other .62 from the J3 float Cub tomorrow

With these numbers on the FA-62 I'm still a bit concerned that the FA-91 isn't turning better numbers(above) The .91 is new to me and was purchased used so I never had any numbers from new.

Have about an hour or so light left....off to fly it!!!

Hey ya guys... Havin a wee bit of bother with my 180 in my Taylorcraft.... Swinging a 17x10 ( or 18x6 I forget ) on 10% nitro

My young fella decided to give my HS and LS screws some unwanted attention [:@] I have got it to good idle and up 2/3rds but at WOT it just stops! My thoughts was it is too lean at WOT so 1/4 a time I have wound HS needle out... Has made little difference and in fact I found I had gone out 7 turns! Still made good idle and up to 2/3rds believe it or not.
So then I wound the HS in and started at 3 turns out and worked it leaner 1/8 turn at a time.... still dies at WOT [&:]

What else could I try guys?? its been a dream to run ( for 4 years ) until now......... Help please! Grrrr

Your LS screw is in too far and prevents the HS screw from doing its job

Not sure with the Saito carb specifically, but many carbs could be damaged from over tightening. Just thinking that might be the case if the kid didn't have access to the low speed needle, or you can't get it to tune up again.
