RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I have 2 4-stroke engines mounted inverted and I never needed to do anything special except watch out for excessive priming to prevent hydraulic lock. They run just fine as is.

The only problem I've had with one Saito, was that the front bearing went. Easy repair and engine is still running trouble free for many years now.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Looking for help with a Saito FA-62a. Ordered a right angle adapter from RC Specialties (this is not a hit on them, Jim of RC Specialties could not have been nicer and tried to resolve the issue, has even issued a refund). Although it was the correct adapter, it would not fit the Saito. The adapter would screw into the engine a couple of turns and then begin to bind. Tried it in the muffler, same thing. Sent the adapter back to RC Specialties and Jim confirmed the issue. Looking for a solution, I took the engine to my local Ace Hardware, to one of those boards where you can check thread sizes. Confirmed that both the engine and the short Saito supplied extension pipe were both M10x1.0. RC Specialties claims that the adapter sent me was also a M10x1.0 thread, yet it won't screw into either my engine or muffler. This engine is going into a Sig 1/5 Cub and I need to come up with a way to get the engine enclosed in the cowl.
Anyone out there run into this issue? Either I have a very strange Saito FA-62a, or RC Specialties has an issue with their adapters (they have a loyal following here on RCU, and I have no reason to doubt their products). If I can't resolve the RC Specialties adapter issue, I still need to come up with an alternate solution.

..... and remember Bill Robison's words..... he found that the Saitos mounted upright had the least amount of oil getting to the rockers, horizontally mounted had some, and inverted had the most. That's just from running though, so any ARO that we can get into those areas is a plus. Remember the old externally mounted valve trains? Keep that oil can handy!

After a fire at his house where he lost everything. Smoke inhilation was a suspected cause as he refused to go to the hospital. I miss his contributions very much.

What blows me away is the picture of a Vincent "V" twin in a Norton chassis in his opening post.
That had to be real monster! I would have loved to have "twisted the wick" on that!

If the "Limies" had made motorcycles like that, perhaps thet would still have >25% of the motorctycle market.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I was told to come down here and post a question! Got a saito 56, the guy that I bought it from took great care of it but it is a little old, but not flown like I woulda!
I adjusted the valves, put a new glow plug in it and adjusted out to about 1 3/4 turns on top end and it's about flush on the low end, screw w/ throttle arm. It is smoking quite a bit. And will hickup inverted and just seems out on the low end. Sputters a bit b4 transitions up.Not used to these 4 strokes but think I will love it once tuned.. I have it on a 40 size ultra stick. Prop suggestions?? I'll take them! I have a 12x6 but will probably go back to a 11x7. I have a clearence issue.. Thanx in advance for replies, Brad.

Sounds like your low end screw needs leaned out a bit. Turn it in 1/4 turn @ a time & see what happens.

With the metal throttle arm the low speed screw is normally flush
With the plastic throttle arm the LS screw is below 1/2 to 1 mm
With the plastic throttle arm the LS screw is below 1/2 to 1 mm
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Keep leaning that LS needle a bit at a time until it dies (from being too lean) when you hit the throttle hard from idle. (note that it would just idle smooth as a sewing maching like that all day though if you didn't hit the throttle) Then richen it back up just slightly until it doesn't die when you hit the throttle hard and fast. This will be your best compromise setting.

"down here"?
Try an 11x8. Give that .56 something to chew on.

That is only a "starting point" & would usually be a bit rich. The low speed neeedle still must be adjusted (in most cases) for correct idle/transition.

The low needle should be adjusted as lean as possible and still have the engine able to accelerate to high speed without hesitation.
If the high speed needle is then not responsive, you are too lean on the low speed needle.

Hi allI'm hoping someone can shed some light on a "problem" i'm having with my 325R5 radial, namely excessive oil coming from the crankcase drain nipple. I have a silicon tube attached so I can see the flow. Not just drops, but a steady dribble...
The engine only has a couple of hours run time on it, mostly on the bench in the past few weeks. It sat for about 8 months after a maiden flight crash :-( so I'm concerned that there may be something rusted inside. Could it be the rings?
It hand starts, idles and revs hard, all cylinders firing, no problem. I've twiddled the needles but it wasn't like this last year...
I also have a 200R3 powering a 68" Su-31, with nothing more than the occasional drip from the vent.
Any suggestions / ideas will be welcome.
Regards, RossG

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Thanks for all the tips!! I have thrown in the towl. I believe there is something wrong internaly. I have sent it out to HH to have them tear it down and let me know. I went through a quart a gas. I had to keep glow on it to even tune it. So tried a new glow plug. No go. So off it goes, it's hard to tune the untuneable!

You mentioned that it still idles great and pulls hard so it doesn't seem likely that the rings are frozen in place from congealed oil. (was there any castor even in the mix?) Any noise or play seem to be coming from the bearings? If so, crud from them could have taken out a ring or two. Are you sure it didn't always have that much oil coming out the breather.... lots of fuel and oil going through that big mill. Keep us posted!
