+1 for Wildcat 20/20 with 2% castor for all my Saito engines. I have mixed FAI from speed shop methanol and Klotz for my high comp engines, though.

Jim, you were right about the FA .40 turning an 11x6 better than the .40a

FA .40 with Zoar 11x6. WildCat 15% 2/4, Fox Miracle, Kavan backplateless spinner and TurboHeader. rpm===10,250

.40a with same prop, same spinner, same fuel, Taipan 4C plug, no TurboHeader, rpm=================9,650

To be fair we could knock off about 230 rpm without the TH on the FA .40, I no longer have the original crimped ended pipe.

Speaking of the Saito FA40, Ijust installed mine last night on the Sonic. Hope its a big increase over my Irvine 25, the Irvine is really powerful and awesome but the Sonic needs a little more horsepower to be happy.

That oughta work just fine. I'm going to use a Bolly 10.5x6 or a Graupner 10.5x6. They'll let it rev a little higher.

My buddy Joe suggested a 10X7 APC (his favorite brand) Ichose a 10X7 MA (my favorite brand) although I am thinking of switching to a 10X7 Zinger or MA Beechif ground clearance isnt an issue, and it probably wont be.

I use MA 10x8 and 10x9 props on my Saito 40. Three blade 10x7 MA props also work great. 15% Wildcat.

It sounds like we are in a similar rehab/work schedule. I am still reworking an Ugly Stik that needs the wing recovered, an Alpha 60 that needs a new nose, and an old Sig Kadet that needs the fuse covered. I should combine them into one plane and go flying. Hope all is well with you and hope to see you flying soon.

Mike, I just ran it with the Bolly 10.5x6, its 100 degrees here at the moment, the best I could get was slightly over 10,400 at peak, not too shabby I say. The idle was much improved at a nice slightly burbly 2,500, couldn't get it below 2,900 with the Zoar 11x6

Hi Everyone,

I need help from the Satio Gods.

I just purchased a used Satio .91 four stroke. It will not start or pop off. It is sucking fuel, glow plug is new, glow starter is charged. Fuel is wild cat 10 percent, designed for
2 cycle and 4 cycle, I have used the same fuel on OS 70, and Satio .65 no problems. I lean it out nothing and full rich nothing and in between nothing.

The only time it will pop is when fuel is injected directly into the carb. It will run until that fuel is gone. maybe one or two seconds. I tried putting my finger over the carb to get fuel in to prime and start
at the same time nothing happens.

Richen the low side. Take the needle all the way out and make sure there's not goop in there clogging stuff up.

I have taken the needle valve all the way out. No junk in there. I did notice there is a nipple on the bottom of the crankcase. I think this is the breather for the engine or is this to pressurize the tank.

I have never had a four stroke behave like this. Engine is mounted ninety degrees.

Good afternoon folks. I have a question about my engine ....a Saito FA-80. I have mounted a Xoar 14x6 scimitar prop on it and just got a new tach (one that works .
Here's the readings I'm getting now after tuning the carb a bit: idle is around 2500 - 2600 rpm and it will die with a puff of smoke if Iadjust it below that. High rpm is abt. 8200 at peak and I've have backed it down to around 8000 rpm. Ihave a Turboheader installed instead of the stock exhaust. I'm using 20% nitro Cool Power synthetic for 4 strokes.
Additionally, there is a noticeable drop in rpm when Iremove the glow igniter. I haven't measured the rpm drop. It will idle lower with the ignitor attached but, will die when Iremove the igniter.

Given the above, is this normal for this engine at this stage of it's life?

I'm really new to 4 strokes (and 2 strokes too for that matter) and would appreciate help in getting this engine set-up properly. It's a new engine with less than 2 hours on it. I have run 3 tanks of fuel through it and it seems to run smoother after each run. The fella Ibought if from had run it less than an hour.

You Yanks are lucky that you have good components to build you fuewls with and relatively cheap to.  I use VP nitro here (where I can "obtain it from the racing fraternity) and mostly synthetics.  I rarely use castor these days as Saito recommend "against it" with the current series of engines.  Mostly I use Cool Power Heli synthetic ol (same as used in YS engines).  I am trying to stay away from the cheap chinese nitro while our resident chemist figures out how to "denature" it (remove excess water).
With regards to low speed idle, better acgieved with the likes of APC or Master Airscrew.  I use wood props to run i9n my Saitos for the first tank only.
Lastly guard you Bolly carbon fibre props no more genuine ones being made though I hear there are a number of clones coming onto the market

Any slowing when the glow power is removed is indicative of too rich a mixture. Also it will probably peak higher with the glow power off. Peak it using the tach and peak it slowly, (as in sneak up on it) one click at a time, when you pass the peak one click it will slow about 50 rpm, that's your cue to not go any leaner.

I think I've answered part of my question above. A new glow plug works wonders. I installed an OSF plug and she no longer looses RPM when Iunplug the igniter and idle has dropped to 2400 - 2500 RPM. It will idle for abt a minute at 2200 to 2300 rpm but, will die eventually.
Peak RPM is around 8500 now and I fattened it up to drop it to around 8200.

So, the question remains ....is this "normal" for an relatively new engine? Can I expect a lower idle as it gets more run time?

I did all you suggested and came up with the numbers above. It pulls real strong and I'm very happy with the engine but, don't want my ignorance to damage it. The glow plug change made a noticeable difference in the the way the engine runs.
Are these RPM readings what one would expect under the conditions I described?

That seems to be a general Saito 4 strokes problem. I have a 100 that didn't iddle well until I installed an on board glow ignitor. After several, and I'm talking about 20 tanks, now is iddling better even w/o the ignitor.

Ijust came in from outside , it is one HOT HUMID SOB out there. Iground tested my new Saito FA40 on the sonic. So far it is giving me 11,100 rpm with a slightly rich tune and 2000 (or less) idle. Using SIG Syn Plus 15% and the factory plug. Iam happy with it.

I can see how an engine would need to idle at higher RPM when new as everthing is tight but, as they wear in the idle should come down ....I think (?). I can live with 2400 - 2500 rpm idle if that's a normal consequence of a newer engine. As I said above ...I don't want my ignorance to damage this sweat engine.
Ihave installed a glow igniter extension because the plug is difficult to reach in this installation.

I have never tried a 14x6 on an .80 so my first inclination is that tah's OK. The Saito SS is actually a rebadged OS-f but sometimes plugs get contaminated during the break in process. I still think you're rich but like you I don't want endanger the engine. I'll try my other .80 with a 14x6, I don't have a Zoar 14x6 but I may have similar Scimitar.
