I dont want any more a fixin! LOL I finaly got a really sweet running motor, ain't gonna touch it as long as it continues running sweet. I now have 3 planes with reliable engines, the OS52, the DLE20 and the Saito 100. OS is on the bottom of the list, it runs OK, but has its issues at times, the DLE only quit on me once, still no clue why it quit, but has run fine for several flights since.

Well for all the experience tuning saito's on this thread there is still no one who seems to know if you can tune an fa220 normally then fit an ironbay regulator and make/not have to make adjustments from there.Pretty important safety wise for bystanders when you are swinging big props don't you think ?

Pope we don't whine over here but you'll hear the odd gunshot now and then...besides,you're only saying all that because you mean it.Flattery will get you nowhere

I wouldn't expect to add a regulator to any Saito W/O having to re-visit the needle settings. That being said, I don't think it would be a difficult endeavor.

Sorry Pete, I did answer that question today but just as I hit the Post Reply button RCU went off the air. I'll answer it again. I set the 2.20 up on the PSP with a .375" spacer under the tank, almost an ideal set up. Then when I mounted the Ironbay nothing changed. I think I already mentioned that John at IronBay didn't know if the regulator would flow enough fuel for the 2.20, it did. I'm going to try the 13.5x8 on the 1.00.

Here is a shot of my new Bolly all the way from Australia by golly, props. The fancy wood under them is the top of a glass shelved show case my wife bought from an estate sale. It had been assembled with the dowel pins too long. I gently knocked it apart with a rubber mallet, cut the dowels to an acceptable length and glued it back together with 30 minute epoxy. It's upside down in the picture.

As Dan says it's a snap either way, one difference, the engine won't get very rich when opening the HS needle, the demand regulator pretty much only gives them what they demand, which is just fine.

Ok thanks for the answers as you know it's a worry leaning off big glow engines.That's a nice bit of walnut or redwood? the bolly props have never spun my wheels simply because of the awful colour they come out in,even apc grey looks good compared to that baby poo beige colour.If you need some tips on painting plastic give me a hoi

I keep forgetting we are a day in front of you guys here (pun intended)

If acdc runs his hundred with a 14x8 and you are running a 13.5x8 it would still be interesting to see the figures even if the props are different.

Bolly carbon fibre props are the best, clubmans are good epoxy stirrers or giving to people to help them out when they need a prop to keep going.

I heartily disagree, the Clubmans pull airplanes around the sky with the best of them.

You mean it's yesterday down there before it's tomorrow here.

OK, here are some numbers for the Saito FA .40 and the BOLLY 11.5x6

Saito FA .40 1980s vintage I guess.
Prop===Bolly Clubman 11.5x6
Fuel===WildCat 15% Premium Extra
Plug===New Taipan 4c plug
Exhaust=stock cast muffler for 40 through .62
RPM at full throttle sweet spot==9,650
Idle===2,100 I tried 2,000 but had to settle for 2,100 as it had a ragged midrange when adjusted for a good 2,000 rpm idle. Set for 2,100 idle it has a very clean transition from 2,100 to full throttle
Picture #1 is at full honk, picture #2 is at 2,100, no smoke at idle.

The Bolly clubman I tried underperformed the APC it replaced by a large margin. I would put it in the Zinger category. But, I've got a couple more to try one day out of fairness.

I think all APCs are pretty boring looking, but they pull airplanes around better than most. We seem to keep measuring RPMs on the ground. It only matters when the airplane is moving forward through the sky. Some guys like to measure how well they will pull a model out of a hover, but that isn't my thing.

The mas series 2 props seem to perform very well in flight on the two saito's i use them on.I have a saito 30 in a pheonix rainbow which i converted from electric(don't get excited i meant the aeroplane) which absolutely grabbed that plane by the scruff of the neck with a 10x6 mas,would rip the prop tips on the engine bench too,i was getting 10500 max can't remember how much nitro now.The mas 14x10 series 2 does the same on the 115 in the midget mustang.Those mas classics are the toughest prop i've tried so far.I'm not kidding when i say that on a badly judged takeoff you can grind nearly all the white stuff off the tips and still get airborne,fly your normal flight and land without problems,the 115 never sounded like it was overloaded in flight.Probably just as well i don't have an eagletree inflight data system.

My favourite props for flying are apc even if they come in that horrible grey colour and i'm too lazy to paint them,although i have in the past.Done correctly there is no noticeable in flight performance difference.Dave i read elsewhere that you like bollies and don't care for apc's to much.The only thing i'm not too keen on with apc's is that every now and then if you mow a bit of grass or skim the asphalt you'll lose a jagged piece off the tip instead of just reshaping the prop tips slightly.

I hope thats not a bit of whinging there O.F. You could also learn how to land and take off that way your props would last longer! Im only saying that cause I mean it !!!!!!!! Cheers the pope

Nope,but i thought i heard the prop whine a bit.In my defence i only fly overpowered taildraggers google the CMPRO website and look up their midget mustang,i've squeezed a 115 into it.

ps i've just googled the site myself to make sure it's still there.They recommend a 60 two stroke or 70 fourstroke,be a bit tame with a 70 i reckon.Besides i've squirelled another three new ones away just in case i have a major faceplant.

I personally use APC props for testing. MAS or what ever for sprt flying and Bolly Carbob Fibre for serious work Fortunately I have more than a few APC and CF Bollys. The only problem I have with APC props was that they stretch when in competition use. Tey don't like being put on the front of Rossi 40's etc. When I sent a stretched one back to the factory many years ago for them to look at the comments were such that I had abused the prop used it incorrectly etc. Fortunately that was a good thing for me because I the pursuit of a better product I found Bolly and I never had a problem with competition props from that point onwards. Just the hip pocket nerve acted up each time I bought them. I am looking at new sources and am leaning towards Sherlock (no comments please) Props here in OZ. Will report back at a later date. Old Fart and Pope check out RCMN article there on the races earlier on in the year

Ok but that's a very specialised corner of the prop market,small props and high speeds.Most people here fall into a much broader category.No comments would be like a red rag to a bull for some don't you think ? ps pope i'm on holidays so you'll have to grin and bear it (no comments please)

Pope listen up.I'm going to do an imaginary hobbsy and delete your post while screaming 'for crying out loud let's get back to saito's' and we should.Here's a question for you.Recently changed my 82 standard muffler for a straight pipe off my fa200r3.Now it's harder to prime reliably for a cold start or after re fuelling plus i had to go 3 clicks richer on the main.What do you think is happening?

Um asking me for technical answer , are you serious ? Ok here goes did your reliability go on holidays ?? Ok enough of the joking . Did the pipe your now using have a muff. pressure tubing on it ? If not its not getting the tank pressurised and therefore you need to open up the needle somewhat . As for prime drama , Im not sure as I never had to prime any of my saitos in fact it would be a bad idea for me . Hope this helped a bit and I'll be good from now on . Cheers

Old Fart tank pressurisation is one thing but straight pipes also need tuning, bit like those big pipes the kids put on WRX's and wonder why they bog down when trying to beat me (the old fart) off from the lights. The richer setting should not be a problem, you just add more carbons to the air, On the prop thing, I bought 1/2 of the stock of Bollys at the shop in Innisfail, all the stock out of Cairns and Innisfail. Got a few "small props" but am almost supplied for life with 11's, 12's 13's and a few 14 and 15 sized props. If you want go they are they way to go and if you want you can still get them (in bulk only) from Bolly in SA. Only problem is cost and I don't know of any shops in OZ that are carrying them at this time.

FNQ, Bolly must have very accurate molds, I have not had to balance a Clubman yet. I have two very accurate ballancers and the Clubmans are spot on.

I've always had to balance APCs. I sand the flash off of the leading edges. I keep forgetting to make up a jig to check runout.

I found that the APC props also make good letter and box openers. I have a few snapped ones I converted to knives. APC and MAS are the only ones I run, other than the big ass 26x10 for the Extra 330. I have a Meijick(sp?) CF for that along with two wooden ones from Germany. Other than a taxi test, haven't flown it yet, too big for the car and my trailer isn't set up yet, waiting on some cash to do that.

Just a quick safety note on mas classic props.If you are running a spinner make sure the spinner backplate FULLY supports the rear of prop hub.
